Chuck, man do you all have a lot of classes to run (24 Classes) looks like you have 149 boats with the classes that have presently met the minimum boat requirements per class. Whats up with the Thunder Boat Class I know several guys were building these over the winter but only two have entered so far? Hope to see more as I was looking forward to seeing them run.
As of this morning, we have 163 boats entered. If I only count the classes that have met the minimum, we have 155 boats in 19 classes. That's assuming that this nice, but somewhat glitchy program I'm using has the counts right...
Here is how the class list evolved. First, there are 18 district classes. Sport 20 tunnel has shown strong attendance in our club and at other races, so we added that. The number of entries confirm this to be a good choice. Some people around the district like to run crackerboxes, so we added that (note that the Jersey Skiff was run with Crackerbox last year). The entries for this class have yet to justify including this class. In order to encourage new people, we offer the RTR class. And finally, we added D and E mono by request. Note that since Open Nitro Mono is already a district class that we don't have F mono. Combining the 18 district classes with the 5 "special interest" classes gives a total of 23. That's one less than your total because I combined Crackerbox and Jersey Skiff.
I too am surprised by the lack of Thunderboats. I know we lost one due to Don's wife winning her award. Trent and Mike Butler are the two that are entered. If there are some more around the district that are ready to race, let's get them signed up. On a personal note, last fall I was considering building one, but decided not to. Based on the way some things turned out, I regret that decision, but time will tell how well the class grows. If we don't get another boat, this class won't run, which will bring us down to 22.
D mono, E mono, and Crackerbox/Jersey skiff are also at risk of not running, which would bring the number of classes down to 19, which is what we ran last year.
Looking back in history, last year we had 19 classes, ran 4 rounds and still managed to finish at a reasonable time on Sunday. In 2006 we had 20 classes but only got in 3 rounds, I think partly due to thunderstorms and also because everyone moved way slower due to having to deal with July heat.
For grins, I just built the heats based on current numbers of 19 classes and 163 boats. The program says we'll run 112 heats to complete 4 rounds. As with last year, we will have our drivers meeting at 7:30, begin racing as soon as possible after that, and keep things moving during the day. Since I'm not the one who will be running the race, at this point I'll defer to Mike, you, and others to determine if we're at a reasonable number of classes/heats to fit into a 2 day race.
