Your sponsons look good, but make the holes bigger. You can take almost half of the material out and still be plenty strong. You can see how much I took out of my frames in this shot

How much does it weigh rtr, and how well does it run?

Mike,

That is a nice build. Thanks for sharing. I recently acquired the same Dumas hull built by Bob Morton from PA this year. He did a nice job on it and lightened it up from the original weight. It was made for nitro and was built from the kit. I converted it to electric late this year and got a few runs in before the weather become uncooperative. If there are any questions you have about mine please ask away. I have ran 1/8th scale electric for the past few years and have a pretty good record with my Steve Muck '74 Miss U.S. Since she was getting pretty worn out I decided to try this hull. Mine is done up as the Miller High Life and has a few spots that need loving (it was raced) but overall pretty decent. In testing the ride attitude was good and very stable. I still need to work out my drive line to get some better testing results though. She was built for 1/4" cable but I may change to 3/16". When I have the time I will get some pics for you. Do you mind if I post them in this thread?

Allen, please do post pictures in the thread. I am going to do this hull as the High Life hull, and my next as the circus, so pics of a high life would be nice! Mike

Here's the one Bob Morton sold me. Cosmetically pretty good for a race boat. There are a few places that need some TLC (new windshield, a better fitting hatch, new exhaust tube, etc) but that's mostly it for the finish. I wanted to test the hull 1st before doing anything else. Most of the time spent has been on the electric conversion. Mainly making an adjustable mount and getting the drive line better situated. The motor is a Plettenburg 370/A1 if I remeber correctly. An 8 pole beast that spins 5000 watts. The pack I use is on the bench. They are (2) 5S 5000mah Hyperion G3 35C cells wired to 10S1P. The controller is the infamous Scultze 40.160 (rated up to 40 V and 160 amps). This setup in my Muck hull ran upper 50's to low 60's and sipped the amps. This setup will suck a few more a due to the aero drag and a less lifting hull. Plus alot of weight had to be added to the Muck hull since it lifted too much. It ran around 15#. This hull is close but a tad heavier. I did not get a precise scale under it yet. BTW I just noticed that their is a UL-1 controller on the desk...that is not the controller!!! LOL!!!

Here's the motor and the mount. I put the cells in the nose through the canopy hull. That is a bit of a drag so I have a few ideas but not sure yet on what I really want to do to make pit life simpler.

Again the motor,

Hers's the sponsons. Not sure if they are true to the kit or a mod.

If you want any other shots or anything else please ask away.

Would you be interested in making up another exhaust tube??? My exhaust was from a dryer!

What is/are the difference between my sponsons and the one's you are going to build? AOA? Depth?

Allen, Looks good! Who did the Miller decals for you? I need to find an accurate source for mine. I have all but the ride pads installed on the sponsons. I may try and do those tonight. I also need to load some more pics. Work has me exhausted tho! Mike

Spoon, I'm not sure who did the graphics. Maybe if you pm Bob Morton here he could tell you.

Those sponsons are definitely different. Kind of narrow. Is that a dehydrol(sp?) I see in that design?

Spoonefcrx:

The graphics can be bought from Wesley"s Custom graphics. He did mine.

AlanN: The instructions for the Circus boat tell you how to make the dihedral on the left sponson. I did this on mine and found it lessens the boats hopping through the turns. I'll try and find a picture of mine and poet it later.

Well thank you for the information guys. From my experience running Fe sprot hydros I tend to stick with the fuller style sponson. I like having the lifting surface to keep the nose up. Then again I am usally running a heavier setup than nitro with 5#plus of batts usually in most forward area of the hull (centered). It would be a pretty good hoot to see all of these running together...hmmm maybe next year. When I had ran this hull it did not show any signs of hopping in the turn but it sure did seem to load up. Might be a poor turnfin (material and design) hurting the performance there. I guess I won't find out any time soon since the temp dipped below freezing and the ice is really starting to build up.

Spoon: Would you care to mold another exhaust tube? I am willing to pay $. I could make another out of aluminum but know that it's just a matter of time to get dented.

I'll try to send more shots when I get her really ready.

BTW I think that the Muck mount and radio box were meant to be an integral part of the hull center....I wouldn't skimp too much!

Since I really don't know what the hull looks like under the skin it's not easy to compare. Bob did build it lighter than the kit but bow how much I'm not sure. Spoons build is definitely to far side for lightness. Wish I could build that well. But this thread encourages me want to make one like he is.

BTW I'm not knocking your sponson mod just thinking out loud. B)
