I retired from the Renton Fire Department in 1999 after 31 years. Been working on big boats and model boats ever since. Currently working as Project manager at the Hydroplane Museum restoring the Hurricane IV. One night a week I help a friend build a replica of the Thriftway, Too. In my spare time I am working with the U13 , Spirit of Detroit. This weekend my son and I will be going to eastern Washington to begin racing in RCU. The following weekend is the first race for electrics in ERCU. I figured it out and I may have two weekends off from boat racing between now and the midle of October. If you are ever at an Unlimited race be sure to stop by and say hello.

Not sure why but the last reply had my sons address onit. Anyway this is Roger Newton. I am the one that retired not him. Retirement! I am working harder and getting no pay. Whats wrong with this picture.!!!!

I work in the product development dept. General Electric Plastics Lexan / Cycoloy div.

I have been mixing pigments, dyes and anything you could imagine into plastic to make it look and feel different for 20 years.

I'm the Project Mgr. at my family's kitchen cabinet shop. I also design kitchens/bathrooms with the computer, no hand drawings for me. I've been in the woodworking business for....... ever, yup all of my boats are woodies.

......... Tried to get into professional drag racing in the early 80's ( warning: you will need very deep pockets to get into any pro motor sport).............

Bob the Fool
I can attest to that! Topfuel dragbikes (T/F ANYTHING!) aint cheap, but **** it was fun!

I'm a Sr Designer for an engineering services company. Our specialty is helping the U.S NAVY design and maintain "stuff" for mine countermeasures and the Special Warfare folks. If I tell you any more, I'd have to shoot you. B) I work with Autocad, Mechanical desktop and Solid edge. I'm about 5 years away from becoming a "Zorrow" myself, then I think i'll follow my passion for motorcycles and custom painting.

Then I assume you work at the Coastal Systems Center. Been there several times myself. Almost moved there in 1989.
Wow, small world! Yea, it's gone from "Coastal Systems Center" to "Coastal Systems Station" to "Naval Surface Warfare Panama City". I've worked for them through various contractors since 1979. Pretty neat place. What brought you to Panama City?

Well, I've been a Disc Jockey for the past 25 years. On the radio and as a mobile DJ doing weddings and parties. At one time I had the largest DJ business in my area with 15 people out almost every weekend. I've been in radio since 1985 and worked all over Northern California including stints in Sacramento and San Francisco. I still do a morning show from 5-9am for a local Light Rock station. As long as someone is stupid enough to pay me to work on their station I'll do it.

I get out of here and head to the office for the rest of my day. I still have the DJ business a little...it's finished at the end of this year and the sign shop is well on it's way to replacing it. The DJ biz has an offshoot video production and projection business I still run. I have a couple of part-time people that run it while I am getting the sign and graphics business built up. The video and the sign shop share a lot of the same type of graphics work and software so they work well with each other. Some of the agencies that I do Audio/Video work for have also used me to do vehicle graphics and trade show signage for some of their clients.
Mike,

what station are you on? KOIT?? and do you have one of those crazy DJ names?? I'll have to tune in and listen

You mean there's life outside of RC boats...... no way.

Great thread.

Roger, are you going to come out and play with us this spring for the Michigan Cup? Some fresh silly fast FE unlimiteds being tested already. Can't wait! 10 horse electric power. oh yeah baby!

For my day job, when I'm not obsessing over boats, I'm a Fire Protection Project Engineer. Been doing it so long I can't rememeber how long. Started at 14 years old in fabrication. Holy crap, I guess I do remember. um... for too long. More than 60% of my life. yikes.

I seem to have become a specialist in large projects that drag on for ever. High rise buildings, shopping malls, multi building appartment complexes and such.

I'm not planning to ever retire. I'm going to die with the throttle pegged to the dash. Besides, I'll need the income to pay for my raging FE addiction for which there is NO freakin cure. There's my retirement dough. Find the cure - sell it to wives. Of course then I'll be at the pond alone. catch 22.

i'm a union carpenter here in NY Local 11(westchester county/NYC), unions in the northeast make some serious $$$( when we work). it's coool but i'm going to branch out into something else. We have a saying for the IBEW and it's I Believe in Easy Work :D

No I'm not on KOIT but a station in Stockton that is very much like it. I don't get to use a crazy radio name. Oddly enough I've been able to use my real name most of my time in radio except for one time at a Country station I used "Man Mountain Mike" at the suggestion of the Program Director since I am 6'5" and 285lbs. Unfortunately, I may have to say goodbye to radio for good within the next year. Business is requiring more and more of my time and besides radio isn't what it used to be. Coporate greed and politics have killed all the fun of it. It's so boring these days I spent most of the morning on IW! Besides I still will be on the air a little as I still do commercial voiceovers and edit TV commercials for local cable and such. I'm having a lot of fun with the sign biz anyway. I like being able to see stuff I've done. Can't see what you do with radio.

In 1987 I started with Canon Canada servicing photocopiers, Electronics Tech. 3 years later I wiped out my RZ350 on Shannonville Raceway, another rider ran me over and I have been a T4 Paraplegic since then.

After that Canon bounced me through sad administrative positions for 15 years, all the while I was trying to explain I had no interest in that type of work and that I could be much more effective as a technician.

They just kept trying to fit a square peg into a round hole and finally laid me off last March 2005.

Since then I have been learning the "system" and going back for math refresher and other basic skills improvement.

I will be trying to get into a program CAD/CAM CNC T&D Design for 1 year, there still seems to be a market for designers. The course director I met with an discussed the aspect of the course, mainly what machines I could Safely work on. It appears not that many but he mentioned I could excel in the design part of the course.

IF I can get advice on such a career in here it would be greatly appreciated.

I live in Milton, Ontario Canada.

Is this a bad Idea??

Any other suggestions for a para that is electromechanically inclined??? Please and Thanks,

Ray

Over 35 years as an auto service tech (mechanic) computers, drivability, and electrical, couple years with the Nike Hercules missiles (not the shoes). Over 30 years with Oldsmobile, when they closed up, I figured I'd do the same. Took the 30 and out with the union pension. Run a small sign shop out of the house, have a couple good accounts. Don't call during lunch. Look for the new Props-4 U banner. We’ll give Grim’s (his design) trailer a new look too. And I am not as old as I look..?
