Slideblues brought up that he was looking for a sport 20 shovelnose in this thread

http://www.intlwaters.com/index.php?showtopic=7808

Well I was looking for another design project to occupy my down time, & to give me some more practice with our potential new CAD software at my work.

I have a basic top plan layout with dimensions, & was wondering if I was in the ball park at all? I am going to ask for a lot of help on this design from the intlwaters gang, & I plan on asking Tom to post the plans in the Free Plans area when they are done. There hasn't been a new design put in there for quite some time. I figure if I get the design from you guys, I shouldn't keep the plans for myself anyways. The design would belong to everyone. :D

Anyways, let me know what dimensions to modify if any, & what you would like to see in a Sport 20 shovelnose design.

I don't think Gene is lookin' for a "Shovel Nose",,I think He's lookin' for an

"Electric Razor" or sumthin' :p

Kidding aside,, Most of the shovel nose boats I've seen over the years have

been,,for some reason; have been Incredibly competetive.

Roger Newton Plans (spelling) wold be a good place to look for "scale" info,

As you know the Seattle area is just alive with "Cutting" edge boat builders

and designers. I'm sure some of them will "chime" in on this subject. ;)

I think Jerry has radar on any post with the word "SHOVEL" in it...........

KEWL idea Wade, It will be interesting to follow along,

Gene :D

Electric Razor.....Sheeeeesh!!!!! :p

Gawd, I'm having connection problems!! Look at "Newton Marine Plans" 101

thru 105

already did :D

I made some changes bassed on the pictures. how about the overall dimentions? is the length good for a sport 21? what about the beam? how about the tunnel width between the front sponsons?

Hi Guys,

Try this for size, 30 inches long, beam over sponsons 14 inches, transom width 10 inches, tunnel width 8 inches, afterplane 17 inches, ride pads 1 5/8ths.

Paul.

Wade, as a designer of many sport hydros over the years, I would completely agree with what Paul told you as a reasonable starting point.

I await with great interest to see what you come up with.

AAHHH, Thats startin' to look perdy good Wade,,,,,Now Just Chop 4 inches Off The

Front and Gene Will Buy It !!

SO,,,Gene,Have you got one of those Mac 21 inboards?? Was thinkin' that might

be a little too much Snoose for Ol' Shovel Face. Those type hulls get a little wild

if you stand on it a little too much.

'Course,,I do know a little somthin' about wild

This is great! Wade is just the man that could pull it off!

Ok.... my input.... how about making it a picklefork :D

sorry.... i'm just younger than most around here :)

but yea.... a new free plan would be most excellent!

I have been looking for a wood sport 20 plan! building riggers is just getting too easy. I want to try something harder..... like a picklefork sport 20

Wade, I'm no boat designer but i've been thinking about this project. How about the front exstending out a bit and come to a subtle point,,Like a real pointed

"shovel",ya know. Then making the rear section narrower, hence giving you

a wider and longer sponson. Carry on B)

On second thought, making it longer in front is probably not a good idea. Your

general proportions look perdy good to me 'cept I think its too wide in aft sect.

 like a Pickle "Dork"

like a Pickle "Dork"
LOL!!!!
I'll narrow up the stern a bit. How waid shoud it be to make it right for a Shovel Nose? 8"?

I was also wondering how deep the ride pad should be below the hull center section. right now, I have them at 1/2"

Maybe 8 inches at the sponson ends,,then to 7 or less at the transom,Maybe .

Lookin' at my sport 60 (pickledork) its about 5/8ths to 3/4s depth on the ride

pad. But another thing I notice on both type of hulls is that the center section

underneath has a low spot , right across the end of the sponsons and slants

up to the front and to the back from that point. I guess its for compressing the air under the boat at the point where the "lift" needs to be applied for the weight

of the engine ,,at the balance point I would assume. :)

At the "Newton Marine Plans" site, some of the old boat pics I saw where some

had made use of what is called "air dams",,Trying to stop air from "spilling"out

from under the boat,,just behind the sponson ends. :)

I suppose that the low spot can be estimated at a point just behind the sponson

ends and the '"air dams" can be added for trimming, in leiu of testing several

different points of CG  Gawd, I sound like I know sumthin' :p
