Today on our last club meeting we spent many hours discussing what kind of

trophies to give out at our races. There were many ideas. Some felt that we

should give something that the winners could use rather than a trophy that

just collects dusts and adds up in numbers. There were ideas like giving out

mugs, props, t shirts for eg. things that can be used and enjoyed. I would

like to know what you fellow boaters feel and what kind of prizes/trophies

you give out at your races. If you went to a boat race and got something you

didnt like would you consider not going back to the race because of it?

Personally, I would like something I could use. Thats IF I ever get one!!

What's your ideas???

Thanks. Nick

I'd prefer a patch to sew onto my jacket/shirt for the trophy part of it. It's something to remember the one time I ran a great race LOL. But our club has in the past given fuel/glow plugs for prizes but we have not done that for some time. In D16 we have patches given out for high points in all classes...again maybe one day we'll give one out for most hulls wrecked in one season.

Years ago when I was younger and raced BMX - trophies meant a lot, esp at the BIG races, After several hundred piled up, only the really important ones mattered.

That said, at our one day WCRA races, they give out small medallions with the place finish on the front and class on the back.

At the District High Point races they give a small plaque of some sorts thats a little nicer. The up side to the medallions is , after you collect a few and don't want them. they can be returned to the club(class logo on rear removed) and be re-used.

Unless it was a really important trophy that I can only dream of right now- US-1 / District Champ- (yeah right).... It doesn't mean as much as the time spent having fun at the lake.....

As far as not returning to a race because of the awards they gave out- never happen..... It's more than what your club gives out at the end of the weekend-

It's how your club handles the weekend. ;)

You can give out brass name plate type of trophies and they can attach to a tool box. We actually gave out 12 pack coolers with names and classes embroidered on them.

HOW ABOUT CASH MONEY!!!!! Everyone can use money!!!

I like the thought of getting a trophies, ribbons, or plaques. This year, we're doing plaques for top 3 . Personally, I prefer trophies, I think they look nicer than plaques and ribbons but I guess if you win enough, then over due time they would start to take up room, so a little of all the above would work. Of course I've never been one to let them sit and collect dust either, the trophies I do have, not just from boats get dusted right along with anything else that might get dusted. I take pride in any award like that, if I did well enough to get something, then I'd like to remember it. Mugs get broke, t-shirts may get torn and ragged. But regardless of what prizes are, the important thing is have fun, dont tear your stuff up, and win!!!! (haha, the competitive side came out) and I guess trying not to run over anybody else may be a good idea too.

Sorry, read the rules of any R/C boat sanctioning body. No cash payout to keep this an amateur sport. We've gone through this before.

T-shirts, hats, towels or something that specified the race, place, class and date would work.

I think if we ever raced for cash money it would take the fun right out of it.
I have to agree with braceru1 on this one.

R/C Unlimiteds has started to give a plaque with spaces for brass/gold/etc engraved plates for events and outcomes. One plaque can have several race results on it and not take up as much room

I like the prizes from the Southern Indiana club gives out every year...

They don't call it the "WINE" race for nothing!!! 3 bottles, uh, I mean, trophys so far! Hope to add more of those to my collection..

I like the special club made awards what ever they are the trophy shop awards are usually just space takers. Or products the racer can use or even restaurant certificates are nice sine then the racers family gets to enjoy the rewards too.

Years ago in my original club, we switched to ribbons for club races, at the time we were holding 8 club races per year and two 2 day big races. We had a lot of us old members recycling trophies to the club races before the switch to ribons, just change the plaque on it. Yes, I still like the custom trophy or plaque for the big races that bring members from out of town.

I agree with the posts about patches, I am very proud of my jacket with race entry patches from the 1970's and 1980's. My small group of friends will attend a record trials this fall just to earn some speed patches from IMPBA, over thirty years now and we never got around to doing that. I think a place patch from a big race would be super and would look great on the jacket. I have lost more trophies due to moving or storage than I have kept track of. Sorry to ramble and jump around on but I never thought about this aspect much before.

Great memories,

Mark

I don't care what you give out at a race, The Idea is race and have fun, if you win somthing great if not that's ok to as long as I have had fun, I have been doing the boating thing for a long time and have given some plaques to the ball teams , all they had to to was change the plates and they were go to go. I have run out of storage space for any plaques or trophies, so I normaly give them to my grandchildren, so they can brag on their Grandpa, ME.

We have given out trophies for many years. With the class count we now spend almost a grand a race. Trying to find a cheaper way without making quality suffer.......

Tee Shirts and hats would be kinda cool......but im the first to admit that ive still got every trophy or plaque at any crazy thing i ever tried at....every one simply represents a good time that i had and i think its always important not to forget! Dont like to take anything for granted especially in this day and age!

I recently threw away sbout three or four good size boxes of trophys and plaques . I like getting them only if I have honestly earned them by thrashing my hardest to get a win or a placement . Don't get me wrong , I like them and the recognition part of the comraderie that we have in this hobby , but trophies that represent "Battles " mean more to me . I still have some old MX trophies from 1974 !!!! Man I'm an old bag !!

Personally if a bundle of good rags , a can of WD - 40 , a couple rolls of nice paper towels would help out a lot more !! A photograph always means a lot as well .

What I have done in the past is to take the plates off the trophy's and take one plaque and line up rows of them on it. A while back, when the closet started filling up with the trophy's was to donate them to the boys and girl's club, they would plaque them and rework them for kids in the Summer programs. We have cut back on the one day series to do medallions, and plaques for the district races. I think the patch idea would be cool to do. My first trophy was the Pinewood Derby first place speed, The car still sits atop my desk.
