What does the term Illegal mean in the US today?

I don't get it. Why pay taxes like good citizen if I can claim to be an illegal alien and get everything for free. I am tired of this crap!!!! Illegal used to me not legal and therefore without rights. Now it seems that all lawmakers care about are the illegals. What happened?? When did this change? Am I off base?
