Terry,do You use carbide router bitts when cutting carbon fiber? If so how well do they hold up?

Yes, I like Freud brand and they last forever. :)

Anyone have a 20 sized (30" or so) bare tub around they can weigh?
Terry, I have a 30" tub made of okoume ply. 8.8 oz.

Thanks, guess I'm in the ball park then, anybody else?

My 06 race tubs was just over 300 g (10.5oz) before being prepped & clearcoated. Gaboon plywood sides & std aircraft plywood where used. RTR boats painted with prop & numberplate (no fuel) is: 1700 g (3.75lb).

Very nice work Niklas! :)

Couple of Q's if you don't mind?

How long is the centre section (tub)?

What's "Gaboon", a type of wood?

What's "Keps" stand for?

Thanks! :)

Thanks Terry,

Nope, I dont mind at all... ;-)

Gaboon is the same as Okumé (same tree, different names) - in my case a 6 mm marine plywood from Italy... :)

The lenght of the tub is 710 mm (27.95"). I doubt that many oval-race 21's are shorter then my boats...

Kep's: actually you are the first one to ask that. In Swedish its the word for a baseball type of cap/hat. But then its spelled Keps - not Kep's. I thought that Kep's looked better when I did the logo... :D And its just a strange name for a Swedish boat - me like. LOL

Keep up the nice work yourself!

Terry, if you were wondering what it might have cost to go out and buy that carbon-foam-carbon laminate instead of making it, check here--- http://www.robotcombat.com/marketplace_carbonfiber.html ---maybe that will take the sting out of the last carbon fabric purchase

Ouch! 11"x32" at a sale price of $235, at that price I'd have to pay myself about $100/hr. to break even.

Interesting stuff though. :)

Terry,

You do some really nice work! I'd never have thought of vaccuum - bagging the stuffing tube in!

Thanks for taking the time to photograph your progress and then share them with us!

Tim.

P.S. I wanted a mill before seeing your handiwork - and now I REALLY, REALLY want one!

You know Terry every time I think I've built some neat stuff you come along and knock me down a notch. A bigger mill is on the Christmas list.

Thanks for the nice compliments guys, yes the mill is really, really coming in handy. I find myself doing a lot of things I used to do on the router table but don't want to get my fingers that close any more.

Thanks Jim, it's not as curvy and "sexy" as my other boats, I'm shooting for functionality and light weight on this one. Gonna pull the cowl out of the mold today so should have some shots of that up soon. :)

Terry,

I built a 30" tub out of 1/8" balsa core with 1/32" skin and 1/32" top and bottom and it came out to 7.4 oz. Also, excellent job on the hydro!!!

Terry,

Well I will have to weigh my tub once I finish assembling it so I can see how close I am to your weight. The tub I am building is just a little over 30" and 4 1/2 inches on the width at the deepest point 2 1/8 inch deep not to badly shaped trying to get it as close as I can to the Avenger Spider 21 size rigger. I'll have to post a few pic's once I have the tub finished. Dave
