I have been wondering why the 1986 7-11 has the word "Phoenix" on the cowling? I know what a phoenix is ,But what is the connection to this hull?

Also while on the subject, what happened to the 1986 Miss 7-11, Did she become the 1987 Miss Exeutone.

thanks

The word Pheonix was for Phoenix fire supression systems. The brand of the fire supression system on the boat.

The boat crashed in 1986 and did not race again.

Was 86 when it rang Steve Reynolds BELL? I was in Madison then and it was a horrible crash. Mike

The crash of this boat was during an off season test at the end of the season or maybe the beginning of the next year with a test driver. Seems like it was early in 1987 although I don't remember exactly when.

Steve Flipped the 86 711 in a test session at Tri-Cities when they were trying out an aluminum skid fin that broke off in the corner causing it to flip. It did extensive damage to the boat including the sponsons and when Lucero switched camps from Miller to Comp, he reverted the boat from Jones sponsons back to Lucero Sponsons for the 87 season. Then in Madison of 87 Steve had his final crash in the Cellular One.

Thanks for the information, After reading this i remember hearing somewhere about the fire suppression system. I remember Steve stating a nick name for the 7-11 after the skid fin crash does anyone remeber what it was?

So the Cellular One and the 7-11 are the same boat with different sponson. Does anyone know where the hull went? Has it been restored in a museum somewhere? How much of a different is there between Lucero and Jones sponson?

Thanks again

Ted,

Not 100% sure of this but I dont think they are the same hull, 8410 hull was the Tosti Asti in 84, open cockpit 7-11 85, canopy 7-11 in 86, then the skid fin accident.

Hull # 8710 was the Cellular One 87, Steve did the big flip in Madison, the hull later was many different names thru 1995. Competition Specialities, Winston Eagle, Vantage Ultra ect.... :(

They are very different. The Lucero sponsons are symmetrical with more pronounced corners/edges. The Jones sponsons are non symmetrical with rounded corners/edges. B)
The Jones sponsons didn't get the rounded edges until at least 1992 as the Miss Madison 8806 hull was buildt with Jones sponsons and they had the sharp edges until at least the end of the 92 season. I'll defer to Hgatchens on this but I believe the Bud T-2 and 3 hulls were shorp edged Jones sponson equiped till at least the 92 season as well

The Bud's changed the sponsons in 1990. Circus Circus was the first to do it.

When non-rounded the outside sponson is 48" wide and the inside one is 38" wide on the real boats. I think the rounding takes an inch or two off these measurments.

The real boat was last raced with Ken Muscatel as the U-14 I beleive, not sure what sponsor. It was used for a display boat when he was sponsored by Silver Dollar Casino, and was there on display for a few years. Recently Greg O'Farrell, the owner of the U-48 hydro purchased this from Ken to use as a display boat, or restore as the Turbine Pay'n'pak, which the boat was supposed to be originally.
