This post started about Lee Crafts and congratulations on their recent and continued success. As my dad stated earlier the HTV we run, and have had success with both at the Impba nationals and worlds has the old Lee Craft bottom. I’ve run that boat for over 15 years, and know its competitive now and years ago. I’m probably one of the few guys in this hobby that has literally never rigged a radio box or set up my own boat, so I definitely fall into the category of just a driver. As a driver in the past 5 years I’ve got to run against most of the best this side of the Mississippi, and unfortunately never got to run a heat against Tommy as our paths never crossed even when I was younger. Tommy’s one I really wish I could’ve run, just to have raced the legend.
As for everyone with a 60 Mph tunnel, I know it’s real, and for those trying to get there it’s possible. I think my 20 mod, and 40 mod are capable of 60 +. I also know I’ve run over a 1000 heats since I was a kid starting at the age of 8 until now. In over 1000 heats, and by a land slide, I’ve lost more than I’ve won. For me losing teaches lessons, and here is one lesson I’ve learned. My set up that might approach the mythical 60 mph (maybe more), never runs lap times even close to my set up that is 5 Mph slower. We threw away the GPS three years ago, went to a stop watch, and our race record improved. It’s hard for me to not laugh when I see so much attention to the Radar Gun, Gps, False God, Mph speed. Our families favorite line “Thank you for bringing your straightaway boat to a heat race” Most often those getting close to 60 Mph, are chasing a number that on a stop watch is nowhere near your best. As for guys such as Jimmy Johnson, Grimm, Wittrig, Drake. These guys do heat race at 60 +, but these are also tunnels world record holders, and the elite. Just because Jimmy says he can run 60 doesn’t make it a good idea for everyone else.
Can’t wait to see everyone at Charleston, and look forward to hopefully seeing a few straightaway boats at the heat race. If you can run 60 +, and I’m in your heat just remember you have enough speed on the outside, and the slower guys like me would really appreciate lane one at the start. I’ll stay out of your way and promise never to cross into those outside lanes slowing your straightaway speed down.
