I've used the dave brown system in my scale boats with good results, there is a little flex with them. Another option is to use aluminum arrow shaft with machined inserts to hook up your clevis, they are a little more rigid.

The Dave brown glass push rods work great. If you go to a Kite store they will usually have a wide selection of carbon rods and tubes. Find a tube that a 4-40 rod slips into and glue a short piece in both ends. Then glue a 1/2 inch piece of aluminum tube over the outside to keep it from splitting.

No matter what you use if you are running a long rod such as in a front mounted radio box put a support in the middle of the rod. With out a support grab the rod in the middle and deflect it up and down while watching the rudder.
