Ok, I know it has probably been asked a hundred times before. But Why do we? I really do not know. Please do not tell me because of the rotation of the props. They rotate in the same direction as the full size race boats. Here is a picture of a full size race prop to prove it.

So why does your tunnel stuff when turning right and not while turning left? Why does your mono spin out when you turn right to hard and not when you turn left?   ;) :)

Just food for thought.

My tunnels turn equally well in both directions...No wait they just sit on the shelf. A lot of tunnels have different sponson depths from side to side. I never spun a mono out, but the ones I have had turned to starboard with more authority than to port because the rudders were on the starboard side and there is more blade in the water when the hull banks to the starboard side. None of my turn fin equipped boats like to turn in the direction opposite of the turn fin side.

It is the rotation of the prop. Back in the day, when they tethered boats and timed them, they ran clockwise because the prop torque was already pulling that way. When radio control came out. We proved we are creatures of habit and kept going the same way even though the need to was no longer there. At least thats how it was explained to me. Ken

This is an inboard prop. Actually for a 5 liter boat.

Ken,

That's what I thought it was something that happens many many moons ago, and doesn't make ANY sense to do it that way now.

Larry

You have NEVER spun a boat out turning right!!!!! Can you set all mine up? Of course your Hydros don't turn left the fin is mounted to on the right sponson (opposite of a full size boat) to go in witch I believe is the wrong direction.

All I know is my tunnels turn BETTER while running counter-clockwise (next time your out try it), like the real boats do. If these little toy boats replicate the REAL DEAL so mutch why are we not running the same direction as they do???

thats for an opc , check the props out for the inboard hydro's , mainly to do with loading against the rotation

Wayne That prop that I posted is for a Outboard hydroplane.

Thanks for posting the picture of the inboard prop Eric. I could not find one of my own to post.

Tim fix the spell checker on your phone.<img alt=" :) "

Kenny is right but missing one key part of this..

The reason the tether boats ran CW is the hobby started out using model airplane motors.. The motors were all spinning CCW.. so.. around CW they went.

As the hobby grew props were cast... lots of props.. and away we go to todays standard in RC

So now that the airplane motors are over why don't we run the right way? Just wondering why it was never changed to duplicate the real boats?

Tim, the marine engines today spin the same direction as the plane engines do. Whith the exception of the OB's. But the OB props still rotate in CCW rotaion do to the power being taken off of the back side of the engine.

So am I right in assuming that the tether racers raced CW to keep the tether cord tight without needing to use a rudder?

It is simple my Dear Watson.

It is the coriolis effect. The coriolis effect is a deflection of moving objects as they are viewed in a rotation reference frame.

It is caused by the rotation of the earth and the inertia of the mass experiencing the effect.

The earth is spinning clockwise and our boats are running clockwise on the course, this consequently makes the boats run faster.

Yea Right................   Gotcha.....

Grim,

Sorry but, I have always wondered why the RC boats go the wrong way ( imo ). Yeah, I know props... It has just been weird considering I grew up watching full size race boats go CCW.

Is this why the kneelers are having a hard time not spinning out?

Tim

lights..

props.. lots of props..

I do not buy it Grim. If that was the case the fullsize OB hydros would need to be running CW also to turn good and have good handling in the corners. There props run the same direction as the RC boats.

Don,

Yes, I personally think it sucks. We do everything in this hobby to follow the real boats, then go race the opposite direction as they do. Why because 50+ years ago someone started going the wrong way??????

People even go through all the fine details of having a SCALE boat, then race it the wrong way!
