I built my first boat back in 1982 while in the Navy's avionics school in Millington TN. The boat was a sport 20 Dumas Pak kit with a twin stick $60 Futaba radio, Dumas hardware and a $60 HB airplane engine with a water cooled head. When you consider an E-1 back then only made around $600 a month, before taxes, that was a sizable investment that turned into a $500 piece of junk by the time it was done. How times change. Now, I make almost as much in a week as I did in a month, actually have to tools and resources to work with to build a boat and have hair that's starting to turn grey. Still have that old HB somewhere in the garage, boat's long gone and instead of having the X-wife destroying boats due to jealousy, I have a wife yelling at me to get them done so she can have her living and dining rooms back.

Thanks for posting pictures and writing history that is what will make this a POSITIVE subject!

This picture was 1991. I was 34.

Note the Indy Unlimited T-shirt.

The boat on it was an OPS 80 powered 80 Mongoose built by Don Bilsky of the Indy model boat club.

Don did a build up article on the boat for 'Flying Models" magazine. Maybe in 1988.

The paint job was a red and white Coca-Cola scheme. Cool looking boat!

I will look for some older pics to post also.

Ron it was good to see a pic of you and Lee Smith, wonder if he's still around.
Hey Mike. I completely lost track of him after we left the hobby in 96'. I reached out to him back in 2012 when we returned and he was focused on Betty as she was really sick. I havent heard from him since. I love those two. They are great people.

INDY UNLIMITED 1990. What a great bunch of DARK hair! :)

All I want to know is who is the cutie pie kneeling in front of me? :) I think she and her husband were from Louisville Ky.

Joe Ingrao kneeling also. Me and Mark Grannis in the center, Dick Jones, Jerry Davet, to the right. Wyatt York far left. Norm ?? to his right.

And wow I have forgotten the others names.

Is that Rich Moore 3rd from left?

Indy/crapshooter guy far right.

These were the Indy Unlimited Top Ten..out of about 100 boats all in one class. A good number of CMD Mongooses were represented in that group.

Team Mongoose

Joe Ingrao - CMB 90 powered Mongoose

Rich Moore - Picco 67 powered Mongoose

Dick Jones - Picco Hydro 90 powered Mongoose

Wyatt York - CMB 90 powered Mongoose

Andy Brown - Twin OPS 45 powered Mongoose

Not Dunlap, Not Preusse.

Ok, one more.
I see Gregg Huhgey, Steve Ball, Dee Hughey, Wyatt York, John Ackerman? Dee Hughey (Ed's brother) looks like the oldest guy there with his salt & pepper hair.

This might be 1987 or 88 Indy Unlimited. I was not there.

Andy-Here is a picture of me and my daughter in I think 1979. This thread brings back good times for me. I started building in 1976 and raced until 2001 and to me the early days were the golden years for model boating. If I remember correctly the IMPBA had 2500+ members and most races had over 100 boats. The Internats had 100+ drivers and several hundred boats and everyone was friendly and willing to help. I found something I was pretty good at and I loved it. I still miss running boats today and unfortunately I cannot see well enough to recognize most of the great people in the pictures that have been posted but I still enjoy looking at boats and racing and record setting and etc.. The issues I read about on this forum makes me wonder if model boating will survive but I think it will. Just have to get rid of the trouble makers and get back to what made boating fun.

Sorry for the quality of digital pictures of prints, but these two 1970 photos prove that at one time I did have hair(although it was receding).

The photo with the trophy is the actual Diamond Cup that I won in 1969. The City of Coeur d'Alene decided to hold a model boat race since the unlimited event had been plagued by riots. My name is engraved on the trophy and I got to keep the actual Diamond Cup for a year.

The other photo was taken at a Custom Car and Boat Show in Seattle. I think I purchased that snazzy sport coat at a K-Mart blue light special.

The Indy 1990 picture is throwing us all a few curves! Standing from left is Wyatt York, Phil Thomas ?, Don't know the next person but it isn't Rich Moore, Andy Brown, Mark Grannis, Dick Jones, Gerald Davet, And John Barr on the end. NOBODY has guessed who the girl is kneeling next to Joe Ingrao, but I know! She is Lisa Butler. She and her boyfriend at the time, Paul Whitaker came to a few races back in the 90's. I have pictures of them at the Atlanta Spring Nats back in 1992.

Looks like one to me. Just wondering if Jerry designed it as well, considering how many boats he designed for Dumas over the years
