The Oberto team, with two preliminary heat wins and a third place in heat 2A, earned enough points to get first choise in the final heat lane draw and used lane one to defeat a Dave Villwock driven Spirit of Qatar outright. Villwock, coming in fourth in heat 2A and winning his other heats, chose lane 2. Between the rough Lake Washington water and a very fast Oberto to Villwock's left, the Spirit of Qatar wasn't able to overcome the combination and placed second, falling short by only a couple of boatlengths to the Oberto.
