When I went to the Toledo show and everyone met at Noon, somebody mentioned that they were an Engineer. The next thing I heard from several others was "Me Too!" It got me wondering what a lot of you do when you're not playing with your toys. I felt left out, I'm not an Engineer, just a Factory Rat.

I've worked at a Paper Company for just over 30 years doing various jobs, mostly in shipping and recieving but the past 3 years as an Assistant Machine Operator. I work on 3 different machines, onwe that puts a wax coating on paperboard, one that puts a Poly extrusion on the board and the other is a roll rewinder. I get a lot of boat work done on the job, most of the time I only work about 10 minutes out of an hour.

How about some of you others?

Well, let's see...I've been a marine diesel mechanic (tug boats -- go figure!), heavy equipment operator, auto mechanic, and even apprenticed as an electrician for a year.

Got tired of getting my hands dirty so for the last eight years, I've worked for the state of Texas as a prison guard.

(PJ's a prison guard?! Who'd a thunk it? ;D )

Well you see I have this company that makes model kits and does laser cutting.............

Aww, never mind! ;D

Well I do support for field engineers repairing photocopiers and fax machines. I'm the guy they ring when they can't fix it. I'm also the guy that trains them on how to fix new ones that come onto the market, and I'm also the guy that travels all over the country visiting the dealerships and making them happy to keep them selling our products.

I also talk with the factory regarding problems we are having with machines in production so they can make changes and countermeasures. Pretty cool job if you like tinkering.

Mechanical Design Engineer. I design special purpose equipment for manufacturing industry. 8) In the past I have operated CNC mills and lathes. I still have access to conventional and CNC mills and lathes, as well as odd bits of interesting materials, bearings, high tensile fasteners etc. I make most of my own hardware, but strictly after hours! ;D

It's a hard job, but the pay is crap.

Nitrocrazed racing: My sponsors dont even know about it....

Me...I make babies...not kidding...

Im an inventor for the company. I also do product design and prototyping.

My high school teachers and parents told me I was a daydreamer...last laugh on them...now I get paid for it..

Grim..O yea I also own and operate Power Surge Racing Products.

Hi Guy's,

I work for my Government :-X - I'm a financial manager. :p Work stress is high but the salary is enough to keep me going there. ;D Unfortunately the one problem is the amount of time I don't get for my boats. :(

As they say when your the companies man they own you. Not far from the truth. :'(

I'm with GT, a Government worker, defence Electronincs Tech, pay for me is better than good (but still not enough ;) ), but unfortunately spend ALOT of time away from home when we deploy. Good thing is though, you get to see heaps and find R/C shops all over the world and buy things you can't easily obtain in Oz. At least they let me take one or two models and fuel away with me each trip, and wherever we go there's water, yep, life's tough for me ;)

Johno ;D

Ron and I seem to have a lot in common....

production teamleader for borgwarner automotive.... I'm on a small team that runs 4 paper converting machines that creates friction paper for automatic transmissions. Like Ron, when the machine is running we get to sit.

I'm a Mechanical Engineer for Lennox Industries. I design 5-30 Ton Rooftop air conditioners. The market is light commercial / low-rise buildings (under 4 floors).

I'm with PJ with the sponsoring bit -To bad Lennox doesn't know about their RC boat sponsor program...

Our in-house machinist sometimes gets to do some hobby stuff for me -but the goverment list is long -so is the wait. Hey and I thought CNC was supposed to be fast :)

1st Year apprentice in Fitting and Machining...not too much money to feed te habit, YET! but i also Ref Soccer, which will be starting up in a week or two so some money will be freed up for tinkering with boats ;)

hmmm i cant wait to get into the CNC, NC and CAM stuff...its all good to me :)

lol... ya had to ask. hmm, well, i've been a drycleaner, a mason, a commercial scuba diver, an electrician apprentice, a waiter, a baker, a copier/ fax tech, salesperson of many wares, network cable installer, and (whew) now i'm a real estate broker for the past 4 years! hehe, i guess i really had no direction in life, i'm only 31, but man i can do just about anything as long as it pays! ;D

Guys,

Well, I thought I would chime in here...in order to offer a different career path.

I'm a synthetic organic chemist. What, you say? Been in school for about 25 years...B.S., Ph.D. and Postdoc training, and will begin working as a medicinal chemist for a major phamaceutical company next month.

Just to clarify...I do drug discovery...those NOT intended for recreactional usage! 8)

So now you know...I am the life of most parties!

Rick :p

Grimmy got everyone's attention in Toledo when he said that! I was thinking "His poor wife!"

I see that we have more Engineers in here.

One guy that I run with here in Kalamazoo is an Engineer for Pharmacia-Upjohn, now Pfizer as of yesterday, working with exotic plants trying to find new medicines. He doesn't say much about his job because most of it is classified. Yup, the Rogaine and Viagra people.

hey guys

i run a fastener company called des moines bolt.. been in the bolt businiess for 4 yrs now.. so if you need bolt nuts ect let me know..

chri

Well I a have been a carpenter for residential homes, & I use to build pole buildings for, & now I am a plastic injection mold designer. I also design vacuum forming tools & match metal dies to trim the vac-parts; fake wood grain parts in cars mostly. So basically I sit in front of a computer all day & make pictures so the tool makers can *****!! LOL!! I have designed a lot of tools for high profile parts on cars & trucks. For instance I designed the mold that produces the front grille on the Hummer H2. My claim-to-fame.

Certified electronics tech, testlab tech, documentation control manager, Teledyne rebuild tech assc. package, GE powerplants tech to AF, civilain consultant to USN target drone pgm with Saberliner testing at China Lake, and currently a road service tech for large PA systems, broadcast and commercial.

Grim designed a birth control device? Im scared now!!!!!

Contract Mask Designer. Basically I draw circuits for computer chips all day. I went contract because the money is better and I dont have to deal with alot of politics. Only problem is that I go from 70+ hour weeks when things are busy, to 40 hours of cruising the net when things are slow. Right now it's REALLY slow.
