It was brought to my attention today that several top universities have compiled free courses online.

Some of the courses even have videos of the lectures you can watch. MIT and others offer advanced engineering courses.

All you need is time and you can get a good education. Of course, you get no credits and no degree, but still the same education.

There are many sites and universities doing this, here is a list of where some can be found:

http://ocw.mit.edu/courses/

Pertaining to design in boats:

http://ocw.mit.edu/courses/mechanical-engineering/2-23-hydrofoils-and-propellers-spring-2007/course-notes/kerwin_notes.pdf

If you can find a fluid mechanics course on there and understand the calculus behind it, take it! Hydroplanes are probably the ultimate fluid mechanics problem in the world by nature of the fact they have to go over a fluid and through a fluid at the same time.

You might find you think about your boat in a whole different perspective afterwards.
