My turbo plugs leak horribly on this engine. I am using nova Rossi CTF plugs. Do any of you guys have better luck with the O'Donnell plugs getting a good seal. I am thinking the taper is not lining up properly. I may end up getting a standard plug head button for it.
Also I am running the engine in board on my mono. What make and type of pipe has work best for you guys. Thanks
Jim

Hi James
If I recall correctly and if it is the same head you started with O’DONNELL plugs. I’ve found there is a slight variation in the taper on the turbo plugs between manufacturers and you will have leaks switching between. You either have to go back to what ever was the original manufacturer or buy a new turbo head and dedicate each head to a specific plug manufacturer.
Thanks John

Thanks for the info John. Engine is going to be a good one. Still working on the set up, mainly pipes. It's getting hard to find the smaller pipes for wraparound motors these days.

We are having a race this Sunday so if you ain't doing nothing stop down and hang with the gang. It would be good to see you.
Bring the riggers for some clock time.

Hope you been doing good catch up with you later buddy
Jim

I don’t have the wrap around version but the CMB pipe has been working really nicely on my DD 21 Nova. The Zipp Kit 21 pipe is nice also.

Thanks Sam, I have a CMB nitro pipe one my Beta, it's a good pipe. But it has similar problems as my Novarossi 5004 pipe, witch is I can't get either one short enough for my wrap around exauhst.
Those pipes work great for the NR DD and Beta.

Thanks for telling me about the zip kits pipe. I will look it over.

The main problem I have is by the time you get your 8 to 8 1/2 inches you lose your small diameter at the entrance of the pipe.

What ever happened to pipes that were like the old Mac, Novarossi nitro pipes that were short and Fat.

I wonder if a car pipe would work. they still use wraparound motors and cars.

Anyway thanks again Samuel appreciate it

Jim

I found my MAC 1120! Pipe problem solved.

If any one runs the NR wrap around engine. This is the right pipe for this engine.

It screams!!

You can see how big the 5004 NR pipe compared to the MAC 1120

Hi Jim- I've a new Zipp 21 pipe you can try...supposedly it works front and rear port arrangement.

The Nova pipe should work fine- have you shortened the header as close to the radius tangent as

possible?... just a thought.

Probably (hopefully!) see you at the Picnic race..... moved to TC and haven't seen the water at all

yet this year.

Thanks-

Tim

Thanks Tim, the NR 5004 pipe had good torque at mid range, and will pull a prop well, but The engine never turned up to good RPM range, even with smaller props.

Even cutting header near the radius the shortest I could get Pipe is eight and three-quarter inches without getting into the taper. By looking at the diameter of this pipe it seems it would have to be close to 8 1/4 or 8 inches to get the power out of the motor because of the large diameter. Not saying I'm right about that but just a thought.

I haven't given up on that pipe yet working on some other things but that mac pipe really woke that motor up.

Well maybe I have to get my little wheel out and find out how long the exhaust stays open and do some math on that pipe.

How long is your zip kits pipe?
I have one on order for my Hydro.

I used to run a mac 1120 in a mono years ago. I remember it being being very fast but the only downside was it was extremely loud and very "clicky". Clicky, as in when it came on the pipe it was either on or off, which was sometimes tough to deal with in rough water. That could have been an issue with my setup though. As you mentioned in your previous post , it looks like the Nova pipe is quite a bit longer than the mac. Don't be shy about cutting the pipe back if you're already out of header length. I've never run a nova pipe but I typically have the best luck around 8"-8-1/4" in my mono.

Brian

Thanks David for the info on the zip pipe.

It also seems that these newer engines like the pipe longer. Say for example My beta with a CMB nitro Pipe runs really awesome at 8 7/8 inches in my Hydro. The CMB pipe seems to have a little bit more diameter than the NR 5004 pipe

So I'm still not done with my NR 5004 pipe. There might be other things going on that I'm not seeing.

Brian, the Mac you are talking about is the one I have. I may find that I have the same problem that you have had when I actually get in to a race. it seem like it didn't have any problem getting on the pipe but I was on some pretty nice water to.
Well this is one of the fun things about the Hobby isn't it. testing testing testing. I love it.

You are correct in saying that there are different tapers on turbo plugs . Over the years if you run a motor say with OS plugs then only use OS ETC. They will leak otherwise no matter how hard you think should be tight enough.

James,
I hope you are doing well. Were you able to find/fix your issue? I have not been on here much until lately beating off the wolves LOL, but saw this post and want to make sure you’re all set. Contact me the usual way if you need help. Thank you.

I got The issue with the turbo plug fixed it must've just been that one batch of plugs. sealing beautifully now so everything's good . This is a very nice engine I like it everything's running great thanks everybody and thanks Ron for Addressing my issue
