Viscosity of the Water? @ your favorite race site. Many of the racers know Different lakes have different water. Some lakes Sticky,(wont allow you to turn much prop) Some have Loose water (allowing you to add pitched up props & Big MPH Lakes. There are variables, Wind, water temp, Chop, & Pollen in the water during the spring events.. I`am surprised the Forums have not talked about this before VISCOSITY OF WATER AT THE RACE SITE THIS WEEKEND?? Anyone got a good way to measure it?

You were watching the same thing I was!!!   :D

yes... it would be interesting to see how it is measured? you know they are testing & starting with a base line prop. one of the IMPBA SAW Oval sites of Huntsville Alabama. DOES NOT yield the fastest water you can run in. Amazing the Speed Records that have been set there.

One would need to research how they measure the viscosity of oils.....That industry does it everyday.

I just don't know that it would be usefull in boat racing....seems like there would be a connection though doesn't it?

interesting........

Specific Gravity with a Hydrometer???? Take a baseline from the tap at the house.. head to the lake and see if it measures different? It would not give you an SAE number BUT it MAY show a difference:)

I have seen a racer place a hydrometer bulb in the pond beofre. I just thought he was nuts.....

I would think that ingredients ( like oil) in the water will be the main cause. I know if we have a heave rain here, as our pond is some what a runoff pond. The speeds will slow down and your ability to to run prop is also effected.

Ok, I googled it. My thought, which are above are close but no where near what i have read.

very interesting stuff.

For checking viscosity of oil, they use a visgauge (spelling) or a gerin falling ball compariter (spelling again)

You could check the PH using a pool test kit, Telling you acid/base

I'm going to check the viscosity of an Ice Cold St Pauli Girl BEER !

You'll be too busy lighting stuff on fire of Bill's

Water hardness test kits, that check water softeners. Take a small bottle, draw a line on it, fill with water, put ONE drop of soap in, look for suds. more soap you have to use, harder water is.............

I Can tell the VISCOITY of the water just by looking at it!!!!!!!

Right now there isnt any it's hard as a rock

O.K. Tom ,I'm bored too-so I got out the old hydrometer and checked tap water(specific gravity 0), bottled spring water(specific gravity 0) and budwiser(specific gravity 2). So don't pour the warm beer on the bank-put it in the lake!

I think maybe we should perhaps test the viscosity of the fluid matter in our brains....because i feel that we have SURELY LOST OUR MINDS!!!!! Do you concur, Mr. Premo? sincerely, Bill GIDSON!!!!?????!!??!!

I think that unless its salt water its insignificant and altitude pressure is the key to a sticky pond and a not so sticky pond.

I also feel that shore line has allot to do with how sticky the water feels.

Could be wrong.

jim irwin once said, "everybody thought i was nuts when i said that." i had asked him about it. what i always looked for was how much algae or murkiness of the water. if you could look "deep" into the water it was "crisp" the boat would run easier, if is was "murky" or thick it would run hard. i would suspect that if we could run in drinking water quality or "clean"we would see better results??? maybe that why the run different after a "resurfacing" after a rain and we race before it gets mixed in.

just a theory.

(and dont send them "rubber room " people to get me, i AM OK!! :p

Betcha! :) Next time you drop by I will show you the radar gun / tuned pipe test

I think you ALL will be surprised what the information tells you once you ACTUALLY look it up. ;) ;)

I don't know about salt water effect on a boat hull, but I can tell you that altitude pressure will mess

up a good runnin motor/ prop combination in a minute. Especially with smooth water. Put bad air with

smooth water together, and you have a slowwww boat. I had it happen this years Nats in time trials,

not just me , alot of slow speeds then.
