Griz

My advise would be build the boat using the kit wood and the plans as written by Dumas.

Use hardware from speed master of AquCraft and use a Octura 3-30 motor mount in the boat.

Grim

Isn't the 3-30 an extruded hard mount? I was under the impression that hard mounts were considered "old school" by most people and not used much anymore. I know I wouldn't use the flat plate recommended by Dumas in the kit instructions. I'm even looking for a way to retrofit my Pak hull with rubber mounts, though I may have to make them myself. I have to agree with the Speedmaster recommendation, considering I just ordered some parts today B)

I dont think theres anything wrong with using rubber grommets around the screw holes in the Dumas plate mount.

I may have to get another plate mount or something, cause the mount cutout for the engine on mine is cut slightly too wide for my OPS .21

Whereas my .40 size mount I need to trim away for my k&b .40 to drop in....

Going this route what do you think I get as far as speed and handling?

If I remember correctly, Grim said somehting about speeds into the 40's, but that's with the bottom modified so that the front section goes all the way back to frame 6

Okay Griz, you want information on how to build the Pak, between you and RJ West, you got me to order one, with Misshydro's thread getting me to do a sport 40 Eagle. Needless to say, neither of my boats will be stock, though I will be doing full photo spreads along the way. The way I figure it, that will mean I can mix up enough epoxy to finish the Whiplash at the same time ;)

My kits are supposed to be shipped out on Monday, along with some decals for another build I'll be doing. Should be fun to see how badly I can screw them up and still get them to work

It should get very interesting really quick when I start bashing the boats ;)

I just had a thought RJ. We need to find a source of optional cowls fot the Pak kit. There were several boats that were all very similar to the Pak in dimensions and overall look. Might be fun to see a Pak running against a 73 Budweiser or 72 Notre Dame. Throw a Weisfields into the mix and we could really have some fun. The only change needed would be to either slightly radius the top of the transom or to notch the transom to match the other boats. You up for the challenge B)

Well yeah, like I said, you can use the Pak 20's hull as a generic platform to start with and take it from there. To benefit our inquiring readers on the forum I included a list of options. You can make the Pay N pak 20 hull into any one of these boats with a cowl change & a nose job.

I havent painted my Pak yet and dammit, now you got me thinking.... :p

Wow, some of those are a stretch, but if you think they are close enough....................

Actually Bill, the Circus, Weisfields and Notre Dame all use the same cowl although the the Notre Dame has a deeper picklefork than the other two. Same thing with the Atlas and U-95, both have deeper pickleforks than the Pak and Weisfields. The only common modification needed is to radius the transom top so that the nontrips extend above the deck edge.

Hi BIll,

I'm picking the easy one.... :p The '73 Pay N' Pak......Heres some pics of where I'm at....

I measured and marked out the center point of my wing and put in a cut piece of wood to keep the wing supports evenly spaced. i laid a thin strip of CA along the wing over my marks, and spritzed on CA acclerant, holding the cowl upside down I carefully lined up my reference marks and pressed it down....In addition, I marked out where my exhaust cutouts will be on the sides, and the top scoop will be a bit more forward on the nose then what the pics shows, right in front of the first line towards the nose is where it should be....I'm using a cabinet latch to secure the cowl in the rear.

I'm going to make the decals from orange & black monokote

Enjoy the pics

RJ, are you telling me I have to do something BESIDES the Pak? I guess that means the 78 Madison and maybe the 77 Atlas. Won't be a problem since I have the plans and color sheets for both, just means more modifying on the Atlas since I need to make the picklefork deeper and build an accurate cowl, wing and tails. Since my kits are due in on Frieday, I guess that means I'll have my work cut out for me.

On a side note, RJ, you have the top cut out layed out too far aft. It needs to be more toward the front of the cowl from what I can see. On a Merlin, there is over 12" between the carb and the exhaust pipes. I know from this due to being around them for the last almost 20 years

yeah I knew I drew my reference lines too far aft...That scoop is pretty much centered in that front part of the cowl after looking at this pic...

If you have the color sheet for the '78 Madison, do that one since there's no changes needed in the hull, the graphics are similar to the Paks, so it should be a piece of cake -----> :p <-----
