A fellow boater bought a used 48'' wooden gas monohull looking at the bottom off the hull there are 2 square strake's 1/8''x1/4'' which are tapered at the bow and stern .All the strake instalations on mono's i have ever seen are trianlangular with the side pointing towards the keel faired to the hull bottom and side pointing to chine protruding with a sharp edge to deflect water. What purpose doe's a square strake serve on a monohull? Regards Andris Golts.

Not much. They should be triangular. The builder cheated. Square can be used but it is a crude method of straking, adds drag, and acts more like a skeg than a strake. Square strakes are easier than tapered to build is probably why you see them.

Proper strakes add straight line lift and stability, better handling /turning ability/speed in corners.
