Finally got around to hauling it to the dump (been on my back stoop this whole time). I smashed the trap in it while it was on my tailgate, ready to throw in the dumpster. Attached are some pics of what I found.
I take it the plastic was part of the porcelain molding process and is not supposed to be there any more. It was obstructing the flow of stuff through the toilet...
