okay, so as we all know, bob violet is no longer producing needles. so i went to the LHS and picked up an OS "remote needle" that comes with a mounting bracket and bellcrank/horn. i was told by someone that the OS needles are no good to use like a violet needle because they are "fine" adjust needles, not "coarse". i took the OS needle a part and it is just the standard needle and seat design making me think that it doesnt adjust coarse enough to use as a remote needle because it wont get enough throw to adjust it enough. i would be using it in addition to the needle on the carb if i can do it that way. any thoughts?

Whoever told you the OS needles "are no good to use like a violet needle because they are "fine" adjust needles, not "coarse", they don't know what they are saying. The OS needle is one of the best I've ever used and what led me to make the remote needle bases for them. The OS "in flight" remote needle kit #71703009 comes with two needles and depending on the motor size dictates which needle and which base I supply (there are 2 base sizes). The OS needles combined with my bases have been used in everything from .21's to the monster 1.0's without issue. At a rough guess I think I've probably put at least 400 of them out there in service the last few years and they work great. Here is a link to thew web page and feel free to ask any questions-http://www.jackrabbitracing.com/needlebase.htm

BTW- you do not use the needle on the carb (the high end needle if it has a low end needle also), take it out completely and block off that opening. Also with 3rd channel remote needles you set the remote at mid point of it's travel them do your initial dial in of the mixture with the actual screw needle. Then once you are fairly close you use the 3rd channel to tweak it for optimum performance. B)

Yes. I have used MANY remote needles and the OS is the way to go.

Don, so we would need 1 remote needle base from you in addition to the OS remote needle LXCN51 from tower hobbies for a complete unit?

What we purchased are this unit http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXCR66&P=7 so I guess we bough the wrong ones then?

Yes on the needle base, I would just need to know the motor size. As for what you purchased, that is a good needle but not set up for 3rd channel. The bases I have also can be used for just remote (not 3rd channel) by using manual OS needles, my twins are done that way. B)

Hi FOlks,

Been meaning to ask. Besides being able to tune with a 3rd channel underway. What is the advantage of a remote needle. I saw K&B seemed to be going that way on some of thier larger outboatds?

The problem is when people say remote needle they need to specify if it is a manual(not on carb & hand adjusted)or powered (via servo).

John it does get confusing, manual (not on carb and hand adjusted) or separate needle mounted in hull, servo activated, or some motors

have a needle in carb, servo activated. I run a needle in carb, on my Mac carb, designed by Steve Wood, servo activated, which is an OS

needle.
