My new JAE gas rigger is finally ready !

I trust it's OK for me to start a new topic to show my completed JAE rigger, and maybe some of you who have completed your gas JAE's will also post some detail photos here.

The cowl is an aeroplane cockpit canopy from a large scale P51 and it does a good job of covering the carb ! The Quickdraw pipe is a steel hotpipe that I had treated with a ceramic coating.

The boat (and engine) will run for the first time tomorrow at the lunch-break at our club raceday and will be the very first gas rigger to run here ! Needless to say I'm very excited about this boat as I've been enjoying my JAE.21 tremendously.

I'm not sure if the photos will show as I used the 'multiple image uploader' for the first time. Here goes.

Are those 'zippkit' width front sponsons? For some reason, they look more narrow than other photos I've seen of the ZippKit Gas rigger.

Hi Steve, Yes the sponsons (and the rest of the kit components) are standard Zippkit. Roll on tomorrow lunchtime !

When you run it the first time, make sure plenty of water is coming out of the engine cooling line. My boat did not seem to cool well enough with the zip kits rudder. I may have clogged it with trash though, still be careful. Oh, and yes it turns just like your .21 boat!!!

very nice clean/straight forward build.We are very interested in seeing how it runs.I will be building one this winter as well.That was a good point earler.The inlet on that rudder looks small..Keep an eye on water exits.

Only one comment for now. I want to see how your Secure IV bag holds up. I've seen postings elsewhere where they don't seem to like gas as it's eaten them up on the inside the the goop gets up into the carbs. I'm staying with my Baxter bags.

just had a look at the pics and i also had a laugh at the ugly tunnel in the back ground that looks like a 7.5 hull with a 3.5 thundertiger and double fuel tanks no hopper?

next photo i saw the funky hippy rug and i thought there something wrong here and the next photo had the SA flag ont he sponson i thought oh ok i understand he from the free state (duess)

Hi guys, firstly thanks for all the comment and advice. I’m going to post my response below next to your name.

The lunchtime test run today went very well right up to the point where the very rough water (strong South-Easterly wind gusting up to 40 kilometers per hour at times), caused the boat to lift one sponson, then hook and cartwheel about three times. No damage to the boat itself but the plasic ‘dome’ of the canopy is destroyed so I will be building a new one from thin plywood to cover the entire engine as well.

Unfortunately no video available but the new RCMK started immediately (with the Sulivan Dynatron starter motor) and the locally prepared Octura 1475 (courtesy of my good friend John Addinall), sent the boat off to an effortless launch and I ran for about 15 minutes using virtually all of the 500 ml bag of fuel. Being the first run, the needles were still a bit rich and the motor was obviously still tight so speed was not yet spectacular. Unfortunately with the broken canopy now no longer able to cover the carb intake from water spray, I could not run again today so further testing will take place after I’ve built the new canopy. But If I think of how I battled to get my .21 JAE and Rossi engine set up on the first few runs, then today’s first run with the gas JAE was very successful and full of promise for much more excitement to come.

 

Jeff, the cooling water flow seemed to be OK and the engine responded to throttle changes well during the entire run, but I take your point, the water inlet holes on the rudder are very small. And you were right, the boat turns beautifully, just like the .21

 

Thunder, the finish on the tub and sponsons is a coat of 2K automotive clear-coat over the epoxy resin seal.

 

Hydro Rob, You have a keen eye ! That tube runs into the brass stuffing tube (through the floor of the radio box) which allows me to squirt lubricant onto the flexshaft between heats. (See the attached photo below). I’ve got the same thing in my .21 rigger as well.

 

Giuseppe, Thank you for your kind words. But being retired now, I just have more time to spend in my workshop than most other boaters !

 

Ron, Thanks for the warning about the Secure bags , I’ll certainly keep a close eye on this aspect.

 

Steve, As mentioned above, unfortunately no one had a video today but my son is a professional photographer and he will do some video of the next run which I will share with you.

 

Sneakysneakyracing, although the F1 tunnel is not based on the more modern looking hulls from the USA like the HTB, I wouldn’t call it ugly, and this boat has won more 3.5 tunnel heats here in the last two years than any other ! But I’m more interested to hear where your knowledge of our country’s provinces comes from ? Just for the record I was born in Natal, spent most of my working life in the old Transvaal, (now Gauteng), and now live in the Cape Province. I’ve never resided in the Free-State all though my family roots of more than 100 years are in that province.

Yes, I looked. I've got the same as the one at the right end for my R-254. I think that I paid $35.00 or $40.00 for it. I'd have to look it up as Tsunami38 over on the Dock makes them but I got mine through Jim Geiger.

I also have the ABS cowl from Zippkits.

Yes Steve, you're absolutely right ! I cant wait to run the big rigger again but I wont run it in such bad weather again.

The forecast for this coming weekend looks good but I may not have the new cowl constructed yet ! I'm aware of a few cowl suppliers in the USA (thanks 'Thunder'), but I enjoy scratch building with thin marine ply so I've decided to make my own. I'll share a photo once it's completed.

 

In all the excitement of sharing my experience with the big rigger, I forgot to mention that I won both the .21 rigger heats with my JAE.21 ! These little boats are such great performers!
