Nashville race site withdraws from ABRA 2006 race schedule
Courier Sports Staff ... Event organizers have officially pulled the plug on the Music City Hydrofest in Nashville, Tenn., after just one year. The unlimited hydroplane event, held on J. Percy Priest Lake near Nashville, was run for the first time last year. But poor attendance and the pullout of the event’s title sponsor doomed it for 2006. “With the loss of LLumar Window Film as our title sponsor, we felt it would be better to step back and take time to develop an event that can be a long-term success for the sport and the community,” said a statement by Kevin Hogan, manager of Family Events Production, the company that staged the three-day event. “Right now, our focus will be to pay our outstanding bills and seek investors and sponsors to bring boat racing back to Nashville in 2007,” the statement said. LLumar Window Film dropped its sponsorship of the U-8 Racing Team last month, fueling rumors that the Nashville race could be next. The Music City Hydrofest was considered a success on the water, despite debate over the length of the lake’s 2-mile track. Nashville played host to a new world record at the distance when Dave Villwock steered the U-16 Miss Elam Plus to an average lap speed of 171.796 mph. Off the water, things weren’t as cheery. Just an estimated 5,000 fans witnessed the event, far down from the 80,000 that the other six racesites averaged last season. Nashville is the third racesite since 2000 to drop the Unlimiteds, joining Lake Havasu City, Ariz. and St. Clair, Mich. The 2006 season will open in June 23-25 with the Thumder on the Ohio in Evansville before making its annual stop in Madison the following weekend where the Indiana Governor’s Cup will be staged July 1-2 on the Ohio River.
