In a coulple of weeks I may be building a Aeromarine Titan 21. I was going to lay the shaft with epoxy and 3" tape cloth. Will epoxy stick to the polyester hull?

youd be better off buying a little polyester kit at the auto parts place or it might be ugly

Sorry Mike, but wrong the epoxy to polyester is fine it is the polyester to epoxy that will not work.

1. Buy good epoxy kit like west systems or system three. They make repair kits and you can order them off the internet.

2. Use 36 grit sand paper to rough up the area you are going to glue to. Make sure all the wax like stuff is gone but do not sand through the cloth.

3. Clean area off using acetone to clean with.

4. Put resin down first then cloth and you are done.

Really Don i did that and a few days later pulled the repair job right out of the boat. No adhesion? Maybe i just did not rough it up enough, ive always been taught not to mix the 2 in any way Mike

now im confused. regular 30 min epoxy won't work wil body kit work.

If the hull is new and not oily, epoxy will work fine over the polyester. Just rough up the area well with sandpaper, and wipe the area clean with acetone.

It's the polyester resin on an epoxy-glass hull that doesn't work. 30 min. epoxy is fine, but the even slower curing stuff is preferred (by me, anyway).

You don't want to use the 5 or 15 minute stuff though; it cures a bit brittle, and supposedly isn't as water resistant.

Mike, I do not know what happend with you but it will work. I have done alot of repair jobs on wave runners and sail boats made of polyester. I used west sysems epoxy to do the repairs with no problems. What type of epoxy did you use?

I'm in the process of repairing a third polyester hull this month with epoxy resin. The area needs to be grease free, clean and dry. I sand through the gel coat which allows for the cloth thickness. The repair strength will be much better than the original polyester layup.

Have done weekly these repairs on full size boats with great sucess.Like Lohring said you need a well degreased and dust free area, rough sanding to ensure mechanical adhesion and use slow set epoxy always.

Don i did it so long ago i dont remember but was told then it was a no no. I do remember using hobby poxy and one time using devcon epoxy over it and it all turned to goo. ive only used west systems the last few years and wont use polyesters unless i have to......Mike

Ive put epoxy over polyester heaps of times with no problems , just make sure you have anice clean surface .. i refuse to use polyester resin and hardener anymore after a work college got the hardener in his eye , he is now blind in that eye , apparently you have 3-5 seconds to get it out of your eye , and even if you do you have a 10% chance of using the eye again - thats from the specialist at an eye hospital - nasty stuff

if you have to use poly wear safety gogs!!
