It appears from the post #3 picture that there is more to this motor than has been mentioned, besides the obvious of the rod being in backwards, what about the slug in the crank? Looks like someone has balanced this crank and the bottom of the rod has wear marks from some trash or in- proper tolerance. Maybe there are other reasons for the problems in assembling this motor. I have several Beta's and EVOs and have not encountered any assembly issues. CMBs RS EVO assembly can be a challenge for the best, try that one.
 
engine is together, skirt and rod chamfer forward, oil hole toward drum valve, the rod did appear to have some pretty rough machining on the big end, all cleaned up and ready to go!
 
Update to my comment, thanks Olly
The latest CMB 21s have a brass insert in the crank to enhance the machining process somehow, this is not a slug for balancing.
