jack, do you still have the boat and would you be willing to part with it? right now we race the u-00 miss circus circus. the one with the met. blue bottom. the canard would make a great stable mate.

Wingnut,

I no longer have the canard, it was turned over to the owner Bill Bennett.

Mr. Bennett, the former owner of Circus Circus casinos in Las Vegas, sponsored Ed Fisher and paid him for the canard design. Ed raced the model in Namba dist.8 for a short while until the boat was voted not legal, but it was legal in my district.

Mr. Bennett asked my ex boss at K&B, John Brodbeck, (a good friend of Mr. Bennett), if he had anyone that would be willing to campaign the Canard in our district. Lucky me was chosen and I raced it for John Brodbeck until I retired from K&B and moved to New Mexico. The boat was raced by some one else until it had an accident. Believe it or not, for some reason while racing the engine blew the glow plug out, backfired, and the boat caught on fire. The boat was repaired and given back to Bill Bennett who displayed it in the casino.

Maybe more than you wanted to know eh?

Jack,

awesome story. I'd have hated to of been the Pit Man that day.............because as you know everything that goes wrong is always there fault, right??

I could just see them bringing in that chard boat and some guy saying "ahuh, dude don't worry my dad's a repair man I can fix it". That's the Jeff Spicole attitude I like.....HAHAHAHHAAHA

Rodney,

Wish we'da had a camera to take pics of it burning. Norm Teague was then the driver of the boat. As soon as he saw smoke coming out the top of the cowl, he shut it off. The top of the cowl started to burn, burning a hole right above the engine. Then flames and smoke. It looked like a real boat burning out there.

The retrieve boat got to it pretty fast and doused the flames out. Norm was able to repair the cowl and race it a couple more times before it was given back to Mr. Bennett.

Is the 45 inch Aeromarine Canard a good hull?? How hard are canards to dial in vs a rigger??

Regards Curt

jack ,i love the history . learning a little about the people i've read about in magazines. keep it coming

Curt,

I'm sorry I don't know anything about the Areomarine canard.

And my experience dialing in my boat was limited because it was already to go when I got it. The main thing that I learned was that you have to keep the nose up.

By that I mean that you don't want the V at the nose touching the water except for stability in the corners. At least that's the way it was with my canard.

A little more trivia for ya'll. I was diceing with Ralph Henry in San Diego, we made the left turn and headed up wind up the back straight. I was right on his tail catching some of his wake. All of a sudden my boat bounced and nosed up. Instead of blowing over, it took flight and glided for about 10 - 15 feet about 2 -3 feet off the water. I thought for sure I lost it. To my and everybody's amazement, the boat landed upright and kept going. lucky I did'nt shut down. Happier ending is that I went ahead and won the race for the day. The Bill Muncey regatta.

I was there for that!!! At the Model Yaht Basin. That was the first time I had ever seen a canard before and I thought "Wow that looks like it could fly!" And sure enough... it did! That was you huh? That was several years ago... Cool memory!

Hey Adam,

Thanks for backing me up on that yarn.

I really liked racing at the model yacht pond.

It's such a narrow and short pond that you have to keep your wits about you.

The other drawback is the salt water.

I have the full size plans that I built my Circus Circus from the boat was a winner right from the get go. I loaned the plans to a couple of what I thought were top men in scale they both deveated from the plans building the sponsons you could not turn it in a forty acre lake even with a turn fin you can't tell some people.

Hap,

That reminds me of another canard story. During the same weekend of the race I mentioned, Bernie Little and his chief mechanic came over to take a look at my boat. Seems he was interested in building an unlimited version of the canard as well. He asked me a bunch of questions about it, and when we got to whether the boat should ride on the front V or not, of course I said no. His chief mechanic didn't believe that and I guess talked Bernie against building a canard.

does anyone happen to have any video footage of a model canard running that there willing to post?

Hap,

Do you still have those plans for the circus canard? (I tried your email, but apparently it's outdated).

Wingnut,

I have a video tape with 2 canards at least on it. One is a 7.5 - cant remember what type.. The other is one of the Wizards with I think an 80 (Picco or OPS.. cant remember)... Unfortunately havent been able to transfer to PC as yet....

So next time you are in Melbourne drop in :)

EMS Racing where did those front sponsons go???

I've only seen 3 of them and only 1 running. The running one was at an old Grand Rapids Wave Runners race, an MRP 3.5 OB version. Not a fast boat but it had a lot of attention. I think that I have it on videotape but no way to tranfer it onto my 'puter. There was an Aeromarine canard at a aginaw race but it was more for show & tell as the owner had a Helluva time trying to keep it from flipping over. The 3rd was a 1/8 scale sitting in IMPBA Prez Pat Kelly's basement. Whether he still has it or is willing to sell it, I don't know.

I ran a Stilletto Dager many years back. I had raced in district 19 for a few years, then I put together a Stilletto. I raced it in D-19 for, 1/2 the scheduled races that particular year as I was not able to travel to all races. I did very well at every race I ran with it.

I finished as one of the top point earners in the district, then went on to race the Top Gun race at Legg lake and beat everyone winning C-hydro. The people in their little click that ran the district races did not like the Canard at all. They were so upset that they would not give me the leather jacket I was suppose to get for winning Top Gun. (Still don't have it) It was well know that my boat was not liked. It was dominating. There was another modified Stilletto at the Top Gun, but his did not run so well.

Setup is really critical. My hull was unmodified.

FYI: The Top Gun Race was my last district race to date.

If one were to buld a sport 40 sized circus circus carnard could he run it under sport 40 or would it have to be run as a rigger (hydro)

cyslyde, you can't run a canard in the sport 2 class because it is clearly stated in th nambea rule book that the " hull must be of unlimited and /or limited design with all riding surfaces [ drive train and prop not included] in the front 50% of the hull lenght. picklefork hulls may not be recessed more than 25% of the total length of the hull." to me since the sponsons are in the rear, the boat would be illegal. i'm not sure what the ruling would be in impba.

But what about the first part of that rule?

" hull must be of unlimited and /or limited design with all riding surfaces [ drive train and prop not included] in the front 50% of the hull lenght.
The Canard WAS an Unlimited that did run...
