Hi , just wondering if someone can tell me what sort of torque (oz/in) you guys use for the rudder servo on a 67/ 80 size rigger

Thanks

Andrew

Bigun! At least 100 oz-in. and ALL metal gears.

Speaking of that (not to steal your thread but your might be interested in this as well), there seems to be a wide variety of pricing in servos in this torque range.

What experience have you guys had with the following "low cost" servos forn Futaba and Hitec verses the $70-$90 versions. the Specs are very similar so what is the difference?

http://www.servocity.com/html/s3305_std__metal_gear_bb.html

http://www.servocity.com/html/s3104_1_4_scale_bb.html

http://www.servocity.com/html/s3302_1_4_scale_mg_bb.html

http://www.servocity.com/html/hs-705mg_1_4_scale.html

http://www.servocity.com/html/hs-755hb_1_4_scale.html (Karbonite gears?)

http://www.servocity.com/html/hs-645mg_ultra_torque.html

Notice there are no digital servos in the group due to the reported reliability problems (boats on fire!!!!).

thanks

FWIW- I use the Futaba 3302's or 5301's (in the twins) for riggers over 45 size. These servos will give plenty of torque at 6 volts- 162oz for the 3302 & 292oz for the 5301. Plus you gain the strength of the bigger gearsets allowed by the larger 1/4 scale case size and the larger riggers have the room for them in the radio box. B)

Don't be fooled by "claimed" torque statements

. Airtronics, Futaba, JR servos that claim 100 in/oz. or more will control any Twin engine hull. We use these on .45's an up. We've tried the "cheaper" brands that "claim" the same specs, but most of the time they will not have enough power.

You get what you pay for when it comes to servos.

What or where are these reports? I have been out of boating for awhile an went with the Spektrum radio (and love it by the way) that needs digital servos. So far no problems (so far) but what should i be watching out for?

The 3305 is a cheap car servo & IMO a POS in boats. Tried them once & they were terrible. The car guys destroy steering servos & were looking for a cheapy & the 3305 was Futaba's answer. The 3104 will only work on 4.8 volts, I prefer 6 volts. 3302 is the best pick of the 3 you listed, been a diehard for me. B)

I've switched to Futaba 3302 in my C and X hydro's. Was using HS705MG's. I'm liking what I'm seeing so far.

RMS in Perth have the JR 1/4 scales at a good price - but - not metal geared. I have one in the X mono.

Digital servos use stepper motors. to old position they require current (usually a lot compared to regular servos). If the boat is just sitting there with the radio on this current draw generates heat. I wasn't there but appearently it go so hot inside oneguys boat that the servo caught fire and so did the boat.

Andrew,

Are you coming to Penrith again on the 19th or going to HV? I will be at Penrith and I'll have the box of 21 rigger props there with me, if you want to do some testing / tweaking. If all things go to plan - i should have my new one there for it's first outing also. Just need to paint it before then!!!!!

Tim.
