Beautyfull !!!

Building my very first wood kit (1:10 scale by ML Boatworks) and it's going very smooth and easy. Those extreme serie kit looks even easier to build !

Keep up the good work Mike !!!

Mathieu

Sponsons are now done, then I seam sealed with thickened west systems/ silica, and did a coat of west that was thickened with silica slightly and thinned down with alcohol. This really lets it build on any wood grain, and helps bead in corners that I didnt want large radius's, yet still flows easy and lays nice and flat. Its a technique I just started using, and I love the results! I use gloves and finger to do the bead seam sealing, and use a foam brush to spread the thinned/ thickened mixture. So, next will be epoxing in the interior of the sponsons, adding the turn fin mount, and start some hardware fitment, then rear wings, etc. Mike

Thanks Cliff...crap, I forgot to call you back last night. I will try to tonight. So busy....

Mike, your boat is looking good.Your new pics with bottom sheeting show the sponson, tunnel and afterplane changes from my Gas Scale T-6 which I believe is an enlarged version of your orginal 1/8 scale.Could you go over the expected performance improvements with these changes?Could you also explain the notch in the cowl bottom and tunnel front?

Hi MIke,

looking good........as usual. I haven't seen you use wooden blocks in the front of the sponsons like that before is that a recent innovation or just something you did on this boat?

Harvey, Sponsons were changed to the newer style that I use on almost all the kits now, this changes AoA slightly and Dihedral/ Andihedral. The tunnel break was moved forward, but no afterplane length changes. In 1/8th scale, the speeds are getting to be so much, that they are flighty, all these changes, including the air breaks at the front of the belly pan area, and at the front of the ram entrance to either side of the cockpit help reduce lift. In 1/8th scale, and especially FE due to the speed ability you can create, this is a must.

On Gas scale, I am not so sure you will want some of these features as you have a lot heavier boat that needs to still fly some to get the boat fast. I know you had a post a while back about your boat tail dragging some...some of these features, if put in your hull, would make that worse, but with a lighter hull like 1/8th scale they work. To really see these features in action on 1/8th scale, please view the video Doug Smock made when he ran the '78 Squire shop I sold him, you can see how the boat is really planted, but fast on FE power and this was the first time the boat was in the water.

Mike, thanks for the info.I think you have a good point on the recovery pads.I've seen 1/8 scale pickle forks with and without, and they all seem to get on plane easily, turn well, regain speed, and fly down the straights. And speaking of flying down the straights,do the notches work better than a wiper blade? Were the afterplane sides reduced in height where they meet the corner of the sponson,or was the rear of the sponson dropped? It would appear that the new design would spill air and not give as much support to the rear of the boat, which in my case I need.It also looks like the afterplane sides are deeper in the rear where I presume you are later going to build ride pads.I have done the same thing though I've been told that the boat should be riding on the prop and not depending on the ride pad for support.

I agree with you that some of the design changes are more suited to 1/8 scale.I believe the power to weight ratio on Gas Scale is not as great as on !/8 scale.I have done a wheelie with my 1/8 scale Bud Karelsen hull on launch because I hit the gas too hard. There is no way I can make that happen on my Gas Scale.

When I get the Gas Scale back together for testing,I 'm going to put some type of water seal between the cowl and hull to prevent water entry, which washes to the rear adding to the rear end weight.

No problem Harvey.

Got more done last night. Sponsons are now internally glassed. I picked up a really nice 10oz cloth and love it. Its easy to work with, lays down better than the 8oz carbon and is better on the wallet. I put two layers in some high stress areas, but in most areas 1 layer is plenty. Also got the turn fin aluminum backer in place, and sheeted the front canard template with balsa and shaped. It will now get carbon veil wrapped and epoxied. I have to put in the L bracket first on either end, and fit threaded inserts into the sponson before epoxing tho. This weekend I plan on fitting the driveline, rudder, turn fin, and making top deck templates. I am making a large push to get this hull done this month as it has to get to the owner asap. Mike

The transom shot is for a customer. Here you go Ton!

Mike,if I might add a side bar in the middle of your thread. For the folks that are building the Gas Scale version of this kit,I found that when I removed the construction braces between the sponsons forward of the cockpit, there was some excessive flex in my opinion in the sponsons.I placed a 1/2" OD carbon fiber tube inside the spar, and anchored the tube to the outside edges of the sponsons. This added little weight plus it was at the front of the boat where the weight could be a benefit.I also added a "U" shaped crossmember in the tub at frame station #4.This boat is big and not your mother's 1/8 scale! I think that Roger's drawings and Mike's framing kit work out well on 1/8 scale, but we're 20 % larger on Gas Scale.Throw one of these big suckers in the water, and you'll know what I'm talking about.

No problem Harvey, Advise from those who have built the boat and have good ideas are always welcome to help others in a thread like this! The gas motor is so big it definately can cause issues with framing vs. proper CoG. Any pics are welcome too! :)

Well, I have been sick since last Friday and I am still fighting it today..antibiotics are working...sllloowwllyy, and did NOT get much done last weekend as I had hoped. However, between one of my fevers, I was able to get some things done. Deck templates were finished, rear wing mounts were made, and top decking was fully cut and test fitted. I will start glueing them down hopefully this week and weekend. Enjoy! Mike

Finally getting some stuff done. Center decks are now on, and the balsa nosing has a coat of carbon veil on, so its more durable. Next, is bond in those rear vertical mounts, add foam, and deck the sponsons. Enjoy, Mike

Well, the customer I am building the 1/8th scale Spirit of Qatar hull for in this thread sent me a 1/10th west coast custom boatworks glass hull, and wanted it rigged and painted. The last two nights I have been working on the paintwork. Got all the base colors on, decals applied, and a coat of House of Kolor SG-100 to protect it all until I am ready to apply the clearcoat, which should be in the next couple of days. The rear horizontal is also painted, just not in the pics. The only other thing that needs work is the rear verticals. They need reinforcement in the base area. Once that is finished, they will get painted. Enjoy! Mike

West Coast Custums Boatworks makes some nice 1/10 scale boats. Very nice to deal with. That's a nice looking boat.

Been rigging the 1/10th scale in the paint above. I hope to get back on the 1/8th scale this week! More pics to come. Mike
