Rotating the pieces in a drill press, while heating, ensures even heating. When they reach the correct temperature, (bright red) they are quickly put in to the hardening oil. Tempering of the split collets is done using the same technique. After hardening the split collets must be throughly cleaned, chemically & physically, to determine the correct blue color when tempering.
