Phantom & Phantom II

Hey Guys!

Well it has been a long, interesting journey since June. I had retired from the Aerospace industry and after 2 years of setting around, doing nothing, to be honest, I was about to go crazy! Then I got an email from the president of an aircraft engine manufacturer that I have done product research and development work for. He said, "hey Joe, got this in my email". He attached an email from Dustin Reichel (coolhotrods), who was trying to find me or any old plans of my original PHANTOM so he could build one. Hell, I thought I was long forgotten after 35 years. Anyway, long story short, I decided to start designing boats again when I found out that a lot of guys still remembered me and especially the PHANTOM. I owe load of gratitude to Dustin and will be compensating him for that.

Some of you guys may not have seen the drawings I posted of the .12 size PHANTOM II A1/2A, Ultra outrigger back in June so I am posting them again. Also I am posting a picture of the built boat, in the raw just to refresh you guys memories.

My next post is of the finished PHANTOM II A1/2A Ultra boat. The culmination of a lot of work from design to test ready prototype boat.

OK Guys, finally after a lot of long days and 7 day weeks here are pictures of the PHANTOM II A1/2A Ultra outrigger hydro. The boat is finished and ready to test. I left out the starter belt for clarity. I know, I know, some of you are going to say "black is hard to see on the water" but I couldn't resist! I love black and it is a great theme color for the PHANTOM II. I am sure the next boats I build will be a lighter color.

Ready to race, it weighs 3 lb. 1 oz. I have added an adjustable turn fin that I hand made but will have them machine made in quantity. The motor mount is also hand made but will be machine made in the future. OK go ahead and ask me "what is the blue fiber stuff on the exhaust elbow"? It is called "header rap" and is used on full scale race car headers to keep the heat in. As the fuel, pressure and water lines come close to the exhaust elbow, I have rapped the elbow to keep the heat off these hoses.

We will be boxing the boat up as soon as I get a stand built for it and sending it to Ken Olvis in Athens Tennessee for testing. Ken has a lot of good equipment for test purposes and will be making posts on the testing phase of this build. He will also be posting videos of the boat running.

It turned out very nice. Two things I would change: black carb & 90 fitting.

A 90 degree fitting on the rudder water line would be nice.

The gold K&B gold carb is going to be too much carb for that engine.

Now Ken has his work to do?

Hey Mark, I don't like the plastic fittings either but that is what I had. As for the carb, the engine is really a Losi .21. Ken will be changing it to a .12 soon. Joe

I sold Ken those engines, they are perfect the way they are, ran excellent. Pipe needs to be a little shorter but your in good shape. The engine is very strong and will pull a lot of prop.
