Ken

If you are talking about strut bearings I always liked needle bearings but you really need a very hard stub shaft or the shaft will wear quickly. I eventually went to lead bearings and they ran good too without as much wear. Ball bearings that small will pound themselves apart with all the side thrust in that area.

In European FSR-V boats , standard lead/teflon bushings are commonly used.

They do the job well , and will last a long time.

Ken, since no one actually read you question From what I remember from the hard shaft days these are what's used http://www.mcmaster.com/#miniature-ball-bearings/=shujvb

The open ball bearings and the flanged open bearings the flanged were used at the front end of the shaft log with a shaft collar holding it in place,,

I also remember finding hardened shaft material was a problem back then hardened drill rod is what was used and could only be found in .187" and had to be chuched up in a drill press and the shaft sanded down till the bearings would slip on & off with out "snagging" the shaft..

Hope this has helped.

Found this also http://www.mcmaster.com/#hardened-shafts/=shunsx
