building 'cheap' brushless motors

Ron, nearly everyone runs their motors water cooled. It looks like the design of the external rotor motors would make this complicated. Do you have any experience of water cooling these motors?
 
I have never considered most of today's brushless motors to be particularly expensive.

What is expensive are the speed controls and they don't seem to be either overly reliable or very well-suited to the world of boat racing.

I am definitely not impressed with the amount of money that I see racers spending again and again - repair after repair. I know that this will bring posts from racers saying "I've been using my MasterBlaster 99 ever since Hector was a pup and I've never had any trouble with it" but I've also seen plenty of the opposite.
