This is the build process for what would eventually be a CMB 35Rs powered Stryker F-41 racing catamaran. A little background information first. I had been out of RC boats for the last 13 years and due to local politics in 1/8 scale buggy racing decided to start it back up. My first successful boat project was an Aeromarine Sprint Cat 21 which I ran down in El Monte, CA at Legg Lake some 14 years ago when I was 15. Back then nitro racing was in full swing and occasionally I competed in the A hydro class against seasoned pros with riggers. My P-5 powered cat never ran well and the only race I ever won was due to attrition by others. Now that I’m out of college and have a successful job I decided if I got back into boat racing I would go at it full tilt. So a year later here I am buried to the eye balls in boats with several ambitious projects, the most interesting is the build-up of a CMB 35Rs powered Stryker F-41 cat………..
At first I wanted to build a fast catamaran, so I bought a sprint 90 from Aeromarine with full hardware and a CMB 91rs. Before I purchased the kit I was not thinking about what class I would be racing in. After looking into it a bit I would be placed in X hyrdo, the fastest NAMBA class offered. Well I remembered the days of getting pummeled by Mark Grim and others and decided to rethink class strategy. I decided to buy a CMD 90 rigger for the CMB 91 motor and look into gas motors for the sprint cat.
After a lot of internet browsing I came across the prototype pics of the big CMB 35 gas motor and like WG decided I definitely needed one of those. A couple of emails later with Tony Grinter and my name was on the waiting list for the new ringed version of the CMB monster. Several months later a box arrived from Australia with the meanest looking RC gas motor I had seen. Literally a giant version of the CMB 91 motor.
