Once you determine the length required for your setup, ideally you should weld up a specific pipe. But then you would need a different pipe for every site and weather condition. Kinda like NASCAR teams do with headers.

Do some research and you will understand the principle behind sonic expansion waves. But you definitely start expanding at the header with a small angle and increase the angle as you proceed down the pipe. The flow separation principle does not apply to the convergent cone.
