    Turbine Jet Thrust Powered Boats

Ta mate. I kinda figured that, so I've shared a few around. A fellow Kiwi of yours has Turbined an old round-nose 3-pointer, and had trouble getting any speed out of it, so we've been discussing the use of the 'wedge' at the rear - which shows up great in your shots :D...

    Turbine Jet Thrust Powered Boats

Yah Murph - I've thought about getting one or two 90 or 100mm ducted fans to test things out a bit before whacking a pair of Turbines on it. If I could find 1...maybe 2 at a decent price (including ESC & LiPo's etc), I'd go for it. I did a quick look around on flea-bay etc. and man, I'd be up...

    Turbine Jet Thrust Powered Boats

Whoa - Murph! I just clicked on your link (thinking it was just a link to the Maritime Museum homepage - which doesn't have all the much info on Spirit of Aus, considering it was and still is the World Record holder). What a surprise to find it's shots that you have taken of her. Sensational...

    Turbine Jet Thrust Powered Boats

Thanks for the heads-up Murph :D Any pics of 'Spirit Of Australia' you have would be much appreciated. And if there are any underside pics around of Ken's second boat (Australian Spirit), that would be a bonus. From the feedback I've been getting on other threads, there's a lot of...

    Turbine Jet Thrust Powered Boats

Ahhh....."stuffing".... Got it now - like the lil red boat at the start, and the yellow-bummed thingie near the end ..??? BJ:)

    Turbine Jet Thrust Powered Boats

Thanks for the comments guys... The Ali tubes will remain at 4, as in the pic. If I wanted to really save weight, I could always use CF rod, but that's a tad on the expensive side. And I've been considering some thrust-vectoring - to compensate for the vertical direction of 'push' (for ride...

    Turbine Jet Thrust Powered Boats

Probably not the right place to ask, seeing as no-ones really had a lot of Jet Thrust boat experience... But - am I better off opting for a slightly longer hull, than a shorter one? I'm tossing up between a 1m long main hull v's 1.2m. With side sponsons around 600-650mm and a centre, slightly...

    Turbine Jet Thrust Powered Boats

Oh... like the front end dips down and under? As opposed to lifting the nose and back-flipping. That kinda thing? BJ:)

we're in Finley and we can't find pizza

Besides....you eat Pizza...you get thirsty. Swill enough Margarita's, and that hunger gonna be done gawn. Ok...so the brain and the rest of the body won't be on speaking terms for the next day or two. But hang - WooHoo! No wonder them Mexicans sing all the time... :P BJ :)

we're in Finley and we can't find pizza

Looks like there's a definite Business Opportunity here... If it was up to me, I reckon I'd be toting around one of these 'Mobile Grills' with a pizza oven on the side. "Feed the masses" I say. Bloke could make a few quid outta that... :D BJ:)

    Turbine Jet Thrust Powered Boats

The Turbines only weigh roughly 3 pounds each (1.5kg) and push out around 30lb (15kg) thrust. Fuel is the main weight issue - they drink about 16oz (call it 450ml) per minute. So, 5 mins at full tilt is going to require around a gallon of fuel - close enough to 10lbs (5kg). I can see how Ken...

    Turbine Jet Thrust Powered Boats

Thanks for the info guys. I've been researching a fair bit lately, and I've found that Ken Warby's record holding boat was some 8.5m long, yet only 2.5m wide - a length/width ratio of around 3.5. Sounds a bit too 'skinny' to me. That's probably because it had to lug that rather large...

    Turbine Jet Thrust Powered Boats

Does anyone have any suggestions as to what materials are good to use on boats? Assuming I'm not going to go down the 'make a plug first, then an epoxy/glass shell', is there a thin marine ply that does the job? Or is plain old balsa/normal thin plywood (with perhaps an epoxy finishing coat)...

    Turbine Jet Thrust Powered Boats

Thanks for all the great info dschigoda :) I think I might do a bit of a 'hybrid' here - use some of those plans to get the general idea of how to make a boat, but base it on Ken Warby's second boat - "Aussie Spirit". It got him 'safely to over 500kmh, so the basic design must be sound...

    Turbine Jet Thrust Powered Boats

Finally got a front-on shot of Kens 'machine'. Now, hopefully I can draw something up from just the two photos - side-on and front-on... :D BJ:)

    Turbine Jet Thrust Powered Boats

I'm not sure how something like that would go, Blackout. These Turbines have some reasonably serious grunt ~ 60lbs thrust between the two of them. There's quite an amount of air being pushed around, if my test-bench runs are anything to go by. Going by the current World Waterspeed Record's...
