Head shims are a PIA to make, ask any manufacturer.
However for making a couple of shims you can do really well with an engineers divider used to trepan/scribe the shim out.
K&S do a nice pack of assorted shim stock.

I know there were better engines sold than K&B but I thought that 'bang for buck' that they held their heads high.
I still have a couple of pylon engines in the cupboards.
I know someone who's whole hobby supply business was based upon sending out the goods with an invoice and expecting a return payment. Of course you only get one chance to stiff a nice guy by not paying.

Although I have not implemented it I do think that a claiming rule is good.
Bring in your 5 or 6 key check points but I guarantee that there will still be engines stronger than others, part of this will be down to good running fits.

Outsider here, but former podium placing in Naviga Hydro and heaps of experience in 'Stock' model aircraft classes. Things like bore and stroke checking in stock classes are so 'old hat' the fast guys know that the engine could get pulled at some stage, so the tweaks are subtle and just cannot...
