Thought with the vastness of the web someone would have posted some tech info and pictures of 1/2 wave pipes .... no such luck finding anything yet :(

If you have been around long enough you likely have seen / used those big straight wall cigar looking pipes of years past like we once used in NAMBA sport 1 class .40 engines, They also were sold by a Australian company for K&B outboards under the name MAGIC MUFFLER and some were known as Wizard pipes.

Looking for technical data, pictures or anything on these pipes of the past .... HELP PLEASE ????

Scott i have some Magic mufflers i could snap a few pics of and measure if you want

Greg
Greg,

Thanks,

but I have a few pipes myself ...

am looking for actual TECH info on the fundamental operation of them from a design view point. loads of stuff on conventional pipe design but found nada on the 1/2 waves :(

I even remember Lee Garcia of "garcia mini marine" screwing around with them back in the early 90's, he had too have found some tech stuff on them somewhere ?

I have been down this path before .....good luck...... ;)

Acoustics of Ducts and Mufflers by M. Munjal (John Wiley and sons, 1987) may help, though it is somewhat mathematical in nature. There are other muffler design books with more empirical examples. Good luck

Henry Nelson and Jett engineering still make these types of mufflers......

I am sure there is something in this mess......your challenge will be finding it.......

Try this in your search engine. It might be what your looking for or can help finding info. condor hobbies majic muffler. I have and original majic muffler w/ inatructions. Condor Hobbies rep. them at the time.1980's. Muffler was developed in Australia for pylon racing planes.Hope thi helps.

Scott: Search around for Ranjet Phylan ( or some such spelling) from Australia- your thinking of his Magic Muffler.

I understand it was very effective in keeping the exhust at proper DB levels & REVS were boosted also. Sort of like magic.....

I first became aware of this speed item in 70's via a friend in New Zealand (Grahame Haines).

He got one for me & mailed it to me about that time era to try.

From my digging round for fact/info on this exhust system(muffler)(from my DEEP memory) it is based on the HYMHULTZ (?)wave length (or ????) system to tune the exhust of our Two cycle motors to raise power levels. It is very effective on WOT running- it was developed for airplane pylon motors/racing.

BUT Big problem back then when I messed around with it on my boats was the motor had ZERO torque curve production with this muffler. In other words the motor was a light switch motor.

Maybe you can get this idea to work.........you're pretty shape & a thinker I know....

As always revs are thought to be easily produced....developing a useful fat/flat useful torque curve is the big problem in motor development....

Been there- done that......

Thanks- hope this helps-

Thanks so far guys .... like the wholly grail it would seem.

Adding more info, am wanting some insight on design for an INLINE twin ... in this application torque creation not an issue .... but more of wanting compact pipes that will still turn high rpm and perhaps doing 2 into 1 routing.
