Im new to the big boats. How do I do the flex shaft to ferrule connection so that it will hold? I can't seem to get soldering to work. Am I doing something wrong? Any help would be great.

thanks for the help guys... went out today and the solder job i tried didnt hold and i ended up over reving my engine and broke my piston and con rod. looking for os 90 parts or new marine 90 engine anyone got anything?

I've always bought the pre-soldered ones for 1/4 inch shafts. I don't know what type of solder is used for sure but I suspect it is silver solder - not the normal electrical type of solder

Infact Locktight 648(red) holds up just fine ;)

Just make sure your flex and endshaft are nice and clean..

Rince with alcohol, apply locktight and put the parts together. Let it dry for 24 hours.

Now you have a nealy unbreakeble joint.

And the good part!

If/when your flex gets old and out of shape, just heat the joint to about 180C, and the part comes right apart.

This is what I use with my .90 engines and I have had no problems 8)

If you are interested in a new CMB .90 engine drop me a mail..

Sorry to hear about your OS. I had problems with flexshaft/ferrule connections when I put a Zenoah in a 40" mono. I tried the red loc-tite, no help. Then I bought some silver solder, used that and staked the ferrule. By staking I took a center punch and made a two dents in the middle of the ferrule taper 180° apart, after I had soldered the ferrule to the shaft. Like Morten said, make sure you clean the shaft and ferrule with alcohol, then give both a good dose of the acid flux that usually comes with the silver solder, then solder. Sweat your solder in so you don't get any carbon down between the shaft and ferrule. This should be bullet proof. With this connection I have spun out cinch collets, twisted flexshafts, jumped wakes, and have yet to get these to break loose. Make sure you have your flexshaft length right because you wont get a second chance after you stake it. I now use a square drive due to the collet problems.

Good luck and have fun

MAY BE THIS WILL HELP SPEEDWORLD HAS A SCREW ON FERRULE. 1/4 SHAFT FITTING, WORKS GREAT, PLUS, USEING A #2 SILVAR SODIERTO KEEP IT TOGETHER. ERIC
