Yes, that works very good for flat areas. Something else, for small areas and curved pieces, lay or stretch Saran wrap or even a plastic bag over the layup and work out the bubbles.

Now you've read it No more ugly finnishes.

I didn't try Saran wrap, yet I have a Miller America setting ready to get done, got too many hulls now. I like building first finnishing last
 
Will wax paper also work? Just thinking it is thicker than plastic wrap, may hold up better and is easy to release.
