Tommy What happen to I/W Requiring Members to post their name on the members list or to a paticular post? I have been a member many many years with you & with Andy years before that & I`am tired of these One Nut, Fly By Night Posters, (hackers or attackers) on their Mom`s computer hiding behind a key board. Does their ability to come on here & attack another Post or a paticular person require a name? Signed... Fed up with it!! . P.s. Most of them dont have clue that their post has No merit without a name. Thanks! Joe Warren.

What type are we working with? I see there are many?
Generally the first paragraph sums it up ...

An Internet troll, or simply troll in Internet slang, is someone who posts controversial, inflammatory, irrelevant or off-topic messages in an online community, such as an online discussion forum or chat room, with the intention of provoking other users into an emotional response[1] or to generally disrupt normal on-topic discussion.[2]

An this section sums it up pretty much.

Identity trolling

In academic literature, the practice was first documented by Judith Donath (1999), who used several anecdotal examples from various Usenet newsgroups in her discussion. Donath's paper outlines the ambiguity of identity in a disembodied "virtual community":[10]

In the physical world there is an inherent unity to the self, for the body provides a compelling and convenient definition of identity. The norm is: one body, one identity. ... The virtual world is different. It is composed of information rather than matter.

Donath provides a concise overview of identity deception games which trade on the confusion between physical and epistemic community:

Trolling is a game about identity deception, albeit one that is played without the consent of most of the players. The troll attempts to pass as a legitimate participant, sharing the group's common interests and concerns; the newsgroups members, if they are cognizant of trolls and other identity deceptions, attempt to both distinguish real from trolling postings, and upon judging a poster a troll, make the offending poster leave the group. Their success at the former depends on how well they — and the troll — understand identity cues; their success at the latter depends on whether the troll's enjoyment is sufficiently diminished or outweighed by the costs imposed by the group.

Trolls can be costly in several ways. A troll can disrupt the discussion on a newsgroup, disseminate bad advice, and damage the feeling of trust in the newsgroup community. Furthermore, in a group that has become sensitized to trolling — where the rate of deception is high — many honestly naïve questions may be quickly rejected as trollings. This can be quite off-putting to the new user who upon venturing a first posting is immediately bombarded with angry accusations. Even if the accusation is unfounded, being branded a troll is quite damaging to one's online reputation."

Most don't care about pointless hilljack insults that contribute nothing to the post anyways, so why would your question have any more merit than one's that don't just because you use your full name.

Seems your the one with the problem, Tom is well aware of it.

Keep posting.

Why are you doing this ??
The post would have a better chance of being heard with a name attached. Why would you post if their is No Name? Most all of us know each other one way or another. thru selling or boating together. Ole jet pak was on another thread cracking someones elses balls without a name. a little digging reveals a name. Strange he would not Just MAN UP!!

If you were awake and paid attention, only new members are required to register with their name.

You must be a new member, or not awake.

Thank you Tom for removing Joe W.'s fly-by insult in the "mangled glow plug" thread, by the way..

It was good to see someone like that not get away with blank insults out of nowhere to someone that is just trying to help a fellow boater with a question.

If that is directed to me then learn how to read my name is in the signature line.

Man enough is enough!!!!!! This is over that stupied damaged/destroied glow plug thread...some of you guys are acting like babies! Plus the name requirments are for new members! Tom is trying to weedout the proublem person that most of us hate! He's been trying to sneak back in to this site! I dont sign my name because of stockers/perverts! Plus I'd had death threats from one person that most of you guys cant stand and Tom really hates!! Only a hand full of guys knows my name and one has actually ment me is Ron Olson... There are times I see a person that tries to give good advices and you all jump on that person like gang busters! TOM PLEASE DELETE THIS THREAD PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Sorry Nitrotwin, it was not. I was talking about Joe W. and his ability to think because he has a full name he can jump in on peoples conversation within threads, insult them without any full reason, and then leave...basically trolling...

His post was removed just because of that very reason yesterday in the "mangled glow plug" thread by Tom our Moderator, and cant seem to get over being corrected about it.

Joe W replied to the quote of "why are you doing this" not you, no problem with you. This place seems to be getting a little mean to anybody that is not known ! Going to be hard to keep the numbers up at this rate. JOHN W. BRIDGES

Thank you, John.

Let me clear this up, maybe shed some light on whats going on here.

I had been helping answer a question in the mangled glow plug post, and Jim O'Donnel stepped in and started making blank statements to my replies stating they are, in his words, "B/S" and continued to prod throughout the thread, basically killing the thread question.

Joe W. took Jim O'Donnel's side, and joined in with the badgering with his blank insults also, mainly because my nickname isnt my given name.

This went on back and forth until Tom stepped in, and removed Joe W's comment, but if you look at the thread you will see exactly what happened.

I still don't understand what Jim O'Donnel's problem is, as he refuses to bring anything to light what he thinks all this "B/S" is that he sees, and has had more than one chance to explain it. All he has done is roll out insults without contributing to the original thread question, and I feel sorry to see things like that happen to the thread starter.

I cant help if someone goes on the warpath with someone, and at first I thought he was joking around...but as it went on, I started to realize this guy was angry and serious. I don't know what his problem is.

Signed,

David Brooks

Thats all I can make of it also so don't feel alone.
Reminds me of why I got out of R/C cars in the mid 80 if you are not in the click you are shunned.

As far as chining in to a discussion. Input of any nature stimulates thought so come on kids we don't

want the hall monitor to step in now do we!

FYI- Tom didn't remove it, I did and that was after your barrage of F bombs in your reply post that I pulled first. Both were serving no good at that point but if you post another profanity loaded outburst like that again you (and anyone else for that matter) will ride the bench for a while as that was uncalled for no matter how aggravated you were.

And personally I have been a long time advocate of requiring completed bio's and a person's full name in their sig line if they choose to use a nickname.

I sure hope it warms up soon as this is one of the worst seasons of "cabin fever" that I've seen in quite a while. <_<
