Polshing Spraymax 2k

I am using Spraymax 2k over natural wood (sealed with epoxy) and some Rustoleum 2x for trim and cowl on a gas sport hydro I’m doing. For those that have used this paint, do you find it’s necessary to polish it? If so, what methods do you use? I want it to look nice but my attempts to polish clears in the past have been subpar. I’ve actually used wet sanding and then some polishing compound in the past and had it come out less shiny than it was unpolished. This, I don’t want.

Hello Richjones.
I have used the Spraymax 2k system with very nice results....but....it all starts before the clear as you may know...before the spraymax I always wet Sand the painted surface with 800-1200 and then apply the clear in several coats flashing 5-10 minutes between each coat ending with a solid heavy last coat...if your looking for the custom show car type result, I dont think the spraymax is for you...dont get me wrong, it is a wonderful product and lays smooth and very shiny but it seems to be NOT a high solids type of clear like the high end custom clears can be....and I never had to buff or polish Spraymax...i hope this helps..

Agreed a nice finish is possible with SprayMax 2k. As stated, most of it is prep work and assuring a smooth, clean surface to spray on. Several light coats followed a final heavy coat.

You may also be thinking....."how much do I need"....here are my results..... A typical .21 size tunnel boat 2 cans with just a little left over....thats me and my paint style...guage your needs from that...the spraybtip has a wide fan to it.. So there is a % that goes into never never land....
There is less in the can than it appears.

Robert..... isn't that a lot of weight ??
2 cans ? even at 50% coverage,,, has to add close to a pound.

That's one of the reasons I went to using PPG clear... The stuff is like glass, no yellowing like epoxies, and don't need much for coverage...
65%fuel won't touch it.

I spray out of a small automotive touch-up gun and have even used the disposable preval sprayers with good results for repair damage touch up..

I haven't "noticed" any significant weight increase....but ofcourse anything added is going to add weight...just not enough to be concerned about....plus a portion is evaporated out...and the over spray accounts for some % of loss...the wide fan tip sprays close to a real spray gun...and thats where I find most of the loss is noticed...i just find the price hard on the wallet.
Im also playing with the PPG shopline clear...i used that over Krylon chili red and looks very nice using a purple gun from harbor freight...

We've used quite a bit of SprayMax 2K Clear Glamour..... it works best when applied in

warm, humid conditions. The key is to apply very light coats with a flash time of NO more

than 5-6 minutes between coats. Don't worry what it looks like, as it levels and glosses as

it cures. I let it set for 3-4 days in the warm, humid state to thoroughly off gas.. Then, we

wet block it starting with 600 all the way through to 3000. We than do the final buff and

polish with Griot's G8 RO polisher with their 2" conversion kit. (also available in 1")....

we use their correcting cremes, polishes, and ceramic glazes, too. Of course, depending on

the quality of finish you seek, some of the steps can be eliminated.


Of further note, there's no need to blow money on the highly priced PPG products- been there,

done that. The house brand 2K Clears at your local auto parts store, with a decent auto body dept.,

are more than adequate for rc nitro boating requirements, for substantially less money. We use the

inexpensive HVLP spray guns from Harbor Freight with excellent results.

All good info thanks! I assume a light coat would be achieved by spraying faster and further away as opposed to moving slower and closer to the boat? I do want it to look nice but I don’t want to spend a large amount of time on it either and I don’t want to buy anything else at this point. I do have a Bauer (Harbor Freight) variable speed buffer. The pad is like 6 in. I have 3 different colors of pads. I have a couple of Meguiers compounds too. Sure would be easier with smaller pads but like I said I don’t want to send too much more money getting this thing on the water.
