i have an 18 inch dumas fiberglass boat. i wnat to use an electric motor. i have a rudder. should i use a flexible driveshaft? how about a straight driveshaft? should i do subsurface or surface drive? what do you all reccomend for set up? Thanks Brad

I don't know anything about the hull, but a 6 cell set up should get it going very well because it sounds quite small.

Go for a flexible surface drive line - much easier to get a mono running well with that. If you're not after outright speed, use a mild modified motor (16 turns or more), then you can run a reasonable sized prop without burning the motor up, or a monster truck motor.

These links might help -

I run a 21" mono for fun with a Kyosho monster truck motor, and it is lots of fun, and extremely reliable. The torque of the monster truck motor lets me run a 42mm prop, but if you go for a car motor, 32 - 35mm would be more like it (depending on the wind).

Thanks for the info. ive got alot to consider now. found some good web sites from the info you gave. thanks alot

Brad

I ran a Dumas ShortStuff fiberglass hull some years ago and in all fairness it is a very obsolete, tiny hull design and will not work well with a fast 6-cell setup. I would strongly recommend selling it in favor of one of the Fine Design FDM Force 21 or 22 hulls (or similar), these are inexpensive yet are large enough and well-designed enough to run very well with a good 6-cell setup. The links above are good resources (hehe ;) ).
