Im new here but not to boats. I decided it was time to get back into boats and start racing again. I picked up a Zipp Kits Envy and will be posting pictures as soon as I figure out how to do so. Wish me luck!

Stephen...were excited to see a new build and welcome aboard...
Just an fyi on the pic posting thing...if you become a supporting member..you can post as much as you need and no fiddling around with pic size...

So the tub with stringers was just a mock up for fitting purposes. Yes I clamped the crap out of the transom so I get a good seal between both pieces being laminated.

If I remember correctly its called melomite or maliomite something like that. You can get it in Lowes or Home Depot. Its basically MDF with all sides covered in like a counter top material. Its perfectly flat on all sides. I have it on my dining room table, hence the darkk wood below it.

Hello,. I'm in the adhesives engineering industry. On your clamping of the transom,.. If you clamp it like this and do not put something in-between the plies, you can get a condition where you do not have enough adhesive between the parts. Believe it or not,. with epoxy, the best bond will happen with a consistent wetted thickness of about .005-.015. You put too much pressure and then some areas will have almost no adhesive. The best is a controlled wetted thickness with any bond.

Thank you for the advice. What do you suggest since I galssed it to the tub sides and bottom already? Is it best to take it apart and redo it or is there a way to add adhesive by possibly drilling wetween the two pieces and adding resin?

It's probably fine. I would just keep this in mind in the future. In your fiberglass work, in my experience the fiberglass, CF, Kevlar, whatever u use, adds stiffness the most when applied in the corners. Meaning that if you add a piece on the bottom and one on the side, you will not see as much advantage as if you covered both of the side and bottom in one piece, and then added a corner piece that just goes about 1 inch across the bottom and up the sides. This will make the tub structure very very stiff and you will see the maximum benefit of adding these materials.

I miss building boats!

Thanks for the info. Why not get back into building them? Theres a ton of kits and organizations that seem to be all around the world now! I was out of it for almost 25 years! Thats now something I wish I never did, I didnt realize how much I missed it until I started building this Envy!

Well,.. I was about 2 seconds from ordering a bunch of stuff to start an electric build.. Something made me stop.. I think gas will be a better direction for me. I loved nitro boats, but the fuel cost, plugs, super special painted needed,,etc etc,.. I'm thinking to build one of the thunderboat class,.. I'm beginning to like the classic style.. and I think the gas boats are honestly easier to keep running.. especially that stok thunderboat class.

There’s plenty of nice kits available. I’m partial to Zipp Kits. Everything comes packaged real well. The have EXCELLENT support if you run into any issues or have any tech questions. They very fast at getting back to you via email.

Yeah. good guys.. I did some design work for them years ago.. I think the thunderboat cowl is still my work.. not sure though..
