Pond is weeded up rivers are flooded cold and rain in the 40s temp wise.I ordered up a starter for Polaris and a pulley from Amazon 35.00 shipped.I needed a starter for my sport 20 I sold all my nitro stuff 10 years ago.I wanted to build a starter for the gas boats and needed one for my sport 20.Looking at Starter on mfg page figure I could build one on the cheap.I had some scrap aluminum a piece of 7075 1/4x2x6 and a round bar 1inch x6 6061 so that’s what I used.Had a couple 12 volt solenoids used.I work on jlg lifts and the horn button has spot welded spades for terminals that break off from bouncing down the road but are still good just have to solder wire on the spade that’s left.Didn’t have the tap that fits the push switch so I bored the handle to fit the switch and used a set screw to hold it in the other end I tapped 3/8 inch to screw it on back support.I also knurled the handle. It’s not the best looking but tested it with my 12 volt jump pack.I ordered a battery and leads from rc battery 3s 5000 hard pack.I’m just going to use it for my sport 20 my gas boats still have pull starts mostly have easy pull ones. The solenoid is kinda big but does work kinda ugly. All parts with battery came to 75.00 shipped. Will update when I receive the battery 3 hours to build.

Great project Bruce, i was also thinking the same and built one.
Had asked Mike this week about what he was using fro his starter.
Also interested in the pulley you are using. Is it about same size as from a dynatron for example?

As i don't have the tools to built the handle, i was thinking of sticking a speedmaster handle to the starter. Do you think it will fitt the starter?

The pulley I bought has to be bored out I also widened the vee in the pulley by 1/16 I could have made one on the lathe but would have to buy a piece of aluminum .Here’s what I bought.

Yep found it. You want it? 25 plus hand delivery fee of a smile and thank you......LOL

Made a few of these some years ago . 1 - 1/2" aluminum tube , 1/8".wall . Cole Herse 30 amp switch , no solenoid or relay . Very reliable on 24 volts . Batteries are heavy going to replace with LiPo

Have been told it will not.
Have ordered the starter, will take some time for it to arrive in the Netherlands. Will have a look then. Relay was out of stock, will wait till they have them again.

Mike do you know what size the mounting holes are, is this US or metric size?

Looks great Bruce. My starter came in today, much faster then I had expected. Will have a better look this weekend.

Bruce, have you already tested your starter?

I finally received the relay. Also compared the dynatron with the starter. I think indeed a speedmaster handle will not work.

Question on the relay, I presume the wire is the + for switching the relay and the housing is the -?

Mike, Bruce few other questions for the starter:
- what battery are you using. Will a 3s 5000 / 30C work?
- what wire thickness are you using, 10 AWG (6mm2), or 12AWG (4mm2)?
- back plate what thickness, 1/4"or more 5/16"?
- dimensions of the pully, similar size as the dynatron?
- length of the handle, 6" is sufficiënt?

Definitely want to use relays to switch the high inrush current starters. I use 30A Bosch automotive relays in tandem - parallel two of them. Also favor the corded stuff, keep battery packs and relays separated from start motor. These days I run a Sullivan Megatron on 14.4V as it turns slower and doesn't want to jump out of your hand when you hit the button - develops plenty of torque without spinning 10K.

Nice work sir.

Yes on relay question. Just tap the main in coming terminal for +12 and send thru switch to wire on solinode. I would used #8 or 10 wire to match what the batteries had. 3S 5000 is what I run. It is an old 4S race pack that got push to far in a race. Puffed it. Weird part is the next day it shrank back down. I dont trust it for a full race load. Removed one cell and made it a 3S and has been working to 2 yrs now. Length of handle needs to come out near the pully. Otherwise it want to leverage out of your hand. 1/4 plate is what I used. I went as small as I could go on the pully I made. It has plenty of speed. Gives more tork to pull the gas motors that way. I attached my handle with an insert I made. I green Loctite it into the plate. The handle slip fits and is held in place with 6/32s. Picture below show a different solinode but still works the same I bought them years ago when Boris was still around. He gave me a link. I had to double sticky tape it to the plate.
