So rules were posted a little bit ago. Very simple for this geographic area. The races overlap with the same boats and people. The rules were simple:
850 KV Motor
8 CELL PACK
57 MM prop

I have seen pics of nitro conversions with higher KV rated motors. What's it gonna be? Are the rules going to be ,enforced or not. If not the class will turn into non sense and not grow. Someone please clarify this. Thank you .
 
I wouldn't worry too much about the KV. Unless the motor is rewound, the motor brand should be good enough. Too high KV will start to melt things with that prop diameter. If there's a question NAMBA specifies this:

The following formula will be used to determine a brushless motor kV output:
KV= (120f/p)/(1.343ܸv)
Variable definitions:
݂
f= frequency of the motor, as measured in hertz (Hz)
p = number of poles in the motorܸ
v= voltage measured across the motor, as measured in volts (V)

I would only check the winners at major events, just like in all "stock" classes.

Right or wrong there is a power specification for IMPBA 1/8 FE Scale in the rule book and has been there unchanged for years.

In addition the 2018 IMPBA BOD released a Technical Notice as an effort to help facilitate commonization across districts and provide an opportunity for cheaper motor options. As I read through the 5 year old document, I still feel it clearly identifies the IMPBA BOD's intent and the "why" we released as a Tech Notice.

With all of that being said, IF those hosting an event choses to deviate from the posted IMPBA rules it should be clearly stated on the race flyer. Please see Section F, IV - General

It started as a club thing that works very very well. For the past 3 years now. Then other surrounding clubs started using them, and more and more FE Scales started being built. Only reason more and more FE scales are being built in a dominated Nitro District is because of the rules that were made.
 
It even says on the FE Rules head that rules can be modified at the club level to peak interest in involvement. So we did. And it works.

Once again for everyone. The rules Ron asked about were started at the club level. The intent for the rules was to make racing affordable and competitive. With the rules the Madison club made for multiple FE classes not just scale it made the racing fun and gained a ton of interest. Not just locally but outside out club. If it makes people mad were not following IMPBA rules to a T, then they’re not about promoting and growing the hobby at all. In the past 5 years we have gained 15 new club members and more. IMPBA had gained that many membership also.

Look for the new registration form soon. FE 1/8 Scale D4 Rules/Guidelines are on the form.
Long story short, about 10 FE 1/8 Scales will be running in D4 in 2023 so some guidance is needed here in D4 also.

Goal is for great racing and an economical motor selection.
To me, 8S with 10S is like a 45nitro racing a 67nitro. Two different setups.


8S Battery. 10S will not be allowed to race with 8S.
Max Voltage 33.84 volts
Speed Controller Minimum Rating 130Amps that can handle 8S
57mm Diameter prop
860kV motor size or less. Motor testing may be needed - if questioned.
Max motor size 105mm x 42mm
D4 will follow the general boat setup of RC Unlimited rules - not racing rules.

I believe D4 clubs will be noting this on their race fliers - like other rule modifications.

And, D4 racers can go beat the D14 racers...........................:)

Guys, my humble opinion regarding controller current rating is it's no use. The best reliable marine controllers we have today to suit 8S are the Castle X8S and XLX2 Hydra. Neither has a nameplate rating for current. The same goes for trying to cap mAh ratings on cells. It's too easy to switch labels or wrappers. Choose 8S as the limit, specify a motor diameter/length/KV and add whatever prop limits.
