Electric cars do make sense (if you can afford one) because our electricity in Washington comes almost exclusively from hydroelectric power. The rest of the country is burning coal, oil or natural gas to produce electricity in power plants so what's actually gained? In those areas of the country, it's a zillion dollar shell game.
Then why don’t we work on fixing those problems instead of throwing out (or banning) solutions to bigger problems that aren’t perfect right away?

Do any of you actually own an electric car? If not you don't have a clue. I saved over $100 last month in "fuel" savings alone. I estimate that I've saved at least $50,000 over the last four years compared to my previous IC car that had a lot lower performance. Hertz is finding that EVs cost half as much as their IC fleet to maintain. Go ahead and support the oil producing countries like Russia, Iran, and Saudia Ariabia. I'll take a real American built car that runs on locally produced energy.

Do not have a clue? Got news for you many of us very much do have a clue and EVs are not a viable option. For example no manufacturer has a consumer level truck that can pull a moderate sized trailer more than 150 miles without a full recharge, this is a well known fact just read the test reviews. I can easily pull my 16 foot fully loaded trailer 400+ miles @ 70+mph on 20 gallons of diesel (2006 Chevy 6.6 turbo Duramax). You do realize the huge carbon footprint created in just producing the battery in your car right? A real American built car, that's humorous. 90% of the raw materials for that battery alone comes from foreign counties. And have fun strokin' that check when it's time to replace that battery. In many parts of the U.S. EV owners pay "road usage" taxes because they don't pay tax on gas. You should have a conversation with a good friend of mine who is a professional EMT and HAZMAT containment specialist, they consider the current EVs a nightmare. If an EV battery lights off in crash there is no saving trapped passengers, it's HAZMAT containment at that point. He went on to say that even gassing off with no fire is fatal not to mention the high voltage risk when trying to cut open a crashed car. Those were his words not mine. There's far more but I'm not going any further, it is far from a bed of roses as you try to present.

I'm all for that IF there's a sum net gain to be had instead of just swapping apples for apples. Sounds like we are back to milking everything we can out of hybrid technology to decrease fuel consumption and emissions while alternatives that make better sense come along.

King County Metro has been using Prius's as base cars for well over a decade and they are pretty good cars, although you have to get used to how the power comes on.

I have a friend who has one of the new F-150 crew cab hybrids and it gets 26-27 mpg and still has a really torquey power curve that you want in a truck. However, when he pulls his 24' house trailer the milage craters to 10 mpg. He does have it set up as an emergency generator when his electricity goes out in his house which is pretty darn cool.

Not surprised his mileage craters, an F150 is not what one needs for pulling that kind of trailer but he'll still get a lot father than an full on EV truck. ;)

The guys at The Fast Lane Truck tried to take their F-150 Lightning up to the Alaska north coast last year, after getting a camper shell installed on it. It only made it for two reasons:
  1. They had one of the hybrid Ford trucks along and were able to use it as a generator to recharge the Lightning, something that took all night and a fair amount of the onboard fuel load
  2. They had a guy that was able to modify(i.e DESTROY) one of their plug in adapters so that they could recharge it off the existing power grid
The same issues would be found in any of the Rocky Mountain or plains states since there isn't enough infrastructure to make an EV really viable. What must be remembered is TFL ordered their truck with a tow package AND THE LARGEST BATTERY PACK AVAILABLE!!!! What I got from all of the road tests they did was the F-150 Lightning was not a real truck, capable of doing real truck like work. Instead, like many of the trucks being sold today, it's a commuter vehicle rapped up in a truck body. I would say the same thing about the 2023 Chevy Colorado. Was looking at maybe buying one, not anymore. What I found is it runs, at best, a 300HP Turbo-Four feeding an 8 speed transmission. They claim it will pull 7000 lbs, and maybe it can, but how hard will that four cylinder engine be working and how long can it hold up under the turbo boost required? Sorry, wouldn't touch one since I had planned on using it to pull my 5600lb trailer, when my S-10 and Tahoe wear out. Not anymore.
BTW, Mike, both my trucks get around 20 on the highway, until I hook up the trailer. Once I do, the mileage also drops down to 10 MPG. You do have to remember, however, that my S-10 has a 4.3 V-6 with an automatic 4-speed while the Tahoe has a 5.3 V-8 with an automatic 6-speed. I wouldn't get that good of mileage if either one had four wheel drive, which they don't.

I had a 1990 F 250 Super Duty with a 460 in it that got 10 mpg driving, towing, coasting or going downhill and maybe while it was parked in the garage. But towing a 22' fiberglass boat I could sail over the mountain passes at 60 without it breaking a sweat.

If you believe what the liberal leaning Pubilc Broadcasting System has reported, the most eco friendly vehicles are diesel powered.

This was based on various factors including emissions from the engines and emissions from the mines to produce the batteries themselves.

This was also based upon the fact that most areas of the country rely on coal fired electricity production. The PBS report stated that after home air conditioning demand, EV charging will be the biggest need for coal fired electricy production.

So, to get rid of coal produced electricy, get rid of air conditioners and EV's. That's not going to happen.

I'll keep driving a diesel powered car and a diesel powered pickup.

The hybrids do and have presented a workable option, as you said for a number of years now. But they don't want that, the want all electric and as I stated a few posts ago it goes far beyond doing things for the environment, it's about control. Turning off an EV remotely is one line of code and it's done. Will be the same for these all electric "smart homes" homes they are also pushing. People better start paying attention to what's going on beyond their own doorstep starting with the WEF and the Great Reset, it's all out there as they aren't even trying to hide it anymore.......

Another thing. Any government that wants me to give up my natural gas oven is not going to put me in an electric car.
they want an all electric world so they can switch off everything you have/need and that works even better that a "pandemic"

You are one of the ones seeing the big picture Jerry. Combined with everything being electric if they succeed here in the push for digital i.d. and digital currency it's total game over. They will have the ability to control every aspect of your life. This is already happening in China, their system has been functional since before c0vid. They also have a social credit score system in place that penalizes you if you say the wrong things on social media, commit any community violations of rules, even jaywalking. The do everything from fining you ($$ is instantly taken) to restricting travel, job promotions etc. Justin "Castro" Trudeau in Canada is salivating over what China has and wants to implement the same, he has said it on multiple occasions.

I see it’s tin foil hat time. A logical conversation lasted for a few pages, so that’s something.

Thank you for disagreeing respectfully Hydro Junkie, but I’m gonna move on now.
Tin foil hat time, LOL! Denial is sooo easy. Go ahead and keep your head in the sand, it's your choice.................

I'd rather be thought a fool than open one's mouth and remove all doubt. Can't remember who said that... Sure it's been said many times before.
I don't jump before I know it's the correct thing to do... I said that!!
Yes it was nice for a day or two!! Not so much politics... Ahumm... Opinions being expressed. No, I'm NOT saying you or anyone shouldn't express their opinions. Only would prefer that the opinions be a little more on the down low here on IW. I'm sure there are better places that those opinions could be better expressed.
One other thing. May seam trivial to you but, I don't think the people that are working on the oil rigs would think it was trivial if they had to give up their jobs and be told they have to learn a new job.

So should we always prop up industries that will not sustain into the future as opposed to teaching new skills and how to keep up with changing technologies?

Seems like a good way to go backwards to me. Like continuing to spending billions of tax dollars making outdated military equipment because the jobs are important to powerful legislator’s constituents.

Things change. Jobs should change too. This use to be called free market capitalism and republicans use to be all about it.

Geeez man you so typify the left, spin the BS and the agenda while ignoring the facts. Nobody said anything about not changing technologies. Biden and his party have been quite vocal in wanting to kill coal mining now yet the vast majority of electric power generation needed for this obsessive push for EVs comes from coal fired power plants. We are a full generation away from being able to completely convert from coal to other sources of electric generation. Our national electrical grid is in such poor condition that a mere 20% increase in EVs will crush it, we can't even keep up with the current demands now. There is absolutely nothing wrong with advancing new methods and technologies but stop trying to drive the train before the tracks are laid down.

And what military equipment that we use is outdated?
