Hello fellow rc boaters, I started building a 32" Wild Thing designed by John Finch.

I plan to run it on 6S, with a 3674 or 4082 motor around 1650kV. Esc will.be a 150A Flycolor.

I changed the design slightly; different ribs and 10mm higher hull at the transom.
Why I did that: because I thought it would be convenient to accomodate the FE setup. Only I found out later, that John Finch successfully transferred his Wild Thing to an FE setup, without any issues!
So to be clear: my design changes are actually not necessary and by these changes I certainly don't want to pretend to 'know things better'. John Finch designed a great looking hull which performs well too!

Allright, let's start the build. I printed the ribs and plating / sheeting.

Gluing the bottom sheeting with thickened epoxy. The aluminum profiles keep the running surface nice and straight.

First glue the straight part. The next day, glue the bended section. Got that from Mr. Finch his build 👍

The sides have been glassed on the inside, before gluing them to the hull.

Next up, some more glassing. Then I can release the hull from the board!
 
The hull is reinforced by a glass weave; 80gr/m2 on the sides and 110gr/m2 on the bottom.

After the laminate cured, I took the hull from the building plate.
I made a stand for the hull by jigsaw. It took me some time. This is how the hull stands in my workshop.

Next up is glassing the inside of the hull. Then making a motor stand. I keep you updated!
 
I'm constructing the motor support at the moment. It is an assembly of birch ply with a carbon fiber motor plate.
The brackets holding the motor plate double as hull reinforcement.

I sketched the motor setup in 3D CAD. That is how I defined the motor angle. I will use a 3674 motor to start with, but the motor support can also hold a 40 size motor.

@ Brad: I will keep an eye on the weight.

@ Dim: yes, I like this setup with short flex shaft. The angle is very small anyway (18 degrees). The lipo will be directly in front of the motor.
 
The motor bracket is glued into the hull with thickened epoxy. Initially, the flex shaft tube was positioned too low. I positioned it higher before gluing. That's why the hole for the tube in the transom is so large 😅. I will seal it of course.

I cut the deck with oversize. I glassed the inner surface with 50gr/m2 glass. It is not yet glued to the hull.

As you might now by my posts, I love DIY building. That's why I decided to go for a DIY rudder for this boat.

The bracket is made from 5 layers of 5mm birch ply glued together. The swiveling rudder holder was initially made from wood as well, but it was too small to hold the rudder blade and I finally made it from aluminium.

The wooden bracket is fully glassed: 2 layers of 50 grams glass. The rudder swivels on 2 bushings in the wooden bracket. The hinge pin is a cut drill bit.

The rudder blade is just a piece of 2mm aluminium. It needs to be sharpened still.

Then, I have to finish the steering linkage. I will also clear coat the wooden bracket to make the wood stand out a bit more.

The rudder plus steering linkage is almost finished. I have to glue the servo bracket in the hull still.

I cut the lipo tray from 3mm birch play, with a jig saw. Still have to coat it and glue it in the hull.

I added a flex shaft support, just in front of the motor coupler.

I ordered a Rocket 4074 2000kV motor. It will be a high rpm setup, but I want to beat 62mph (100 km/h) 😎

Dirk, are there two sheets of ply making up the deck stacked one on top of the other?
There appears to be a "step" around the top edge of the deck..??
Or is it just a pencil mark ?
