I use one in front of the motor in place of the pull starter. I like not having to tuck the belt away. I use a Sullivan Dynatron 12/24 volt starter and use 2-12v 7amp SLA batteries. This set up spins a gas motor well. Some like the more compact ones that have the Lithium ion batteries attached in an all in one unit and those are nice I understand but will cost you some money. Some build their own. Personally, I had the starter and aside from the pulley and a belt, the batteries cost me 40.00.

I use the same exact setup as Rich...a dynatron on 24 volts will start pretty much anything.. I used some #10 fine strand speaker wire between the batteries and starter..soldered all of the terminals..
feed it the juice, and it will work fine.

BTW... DON'T use the smaller 12 volt Sullivan starters on 24 volts... it may work for a while, but it will spin the guts out of the armature... ask me how I know.

i like the idea of not tucking the belt too. The starters i have are the sullivan hi torque deluxe. I'll have a look at the dynatron. thanks for the reply

so do you think the reg one on 12v would even think of turning it over or should i just look for a dynatron?BTW... DON'T use the smaller 12 volt Sullivan starters on 24 volts... it may work for a while, but it will spin the guts out of the armature... ask me how I know.

They show up on the For Sale Section of this forum and also over on the Dock occasionally. You might hold out for one with a handle. That’s how mine is set up. It’s a lot easier on the wrist.

Like Frank said earlier, you can do it but eventually it may burn out. If you have a few and are willing to sacrifice one, it’ll probably at least last a little while.

I ran the deluxe on 24 for years. Only thing that went bad is the brushes wore out. Put a new set in and kept going. converted it to run on Millwaukee batteries for a while now has 4s lipo. I do not recomend power tool battery for gas engines. Killed a couple of them from over amping them.

Get the Dynatron , the 12 will sling all the solder off the armature and self destruct .

I have run the dynatron and the smaller sullivan on a 6s lipo since I started with gas boats in 2007. These were my nitro starters and I was still running Nitro then. so they were probably purchased around 2000 still working today. They spin my 27's and 30s with no issue with either, I change the lipo out every three or 4 years, pretty light setup for my starter "box"

These have a powerful low rpm motor that will start stroked 36mm and 38mm engines as well as the 61cc inlines easily. Fully self contained cordless extreme power.

I use Daniel's with the geezer wheel/collet combo... was told the pulley up front can twist the crank. I rarely use it though, mainly for backup after dunking it, or if I over prime and flood the danged thing.
Ignition side pulley is fine. It is when you run them on the output side that you can have an issue. You are starting a dead weight (flywheel) and all the force is getting transmitted through the crankpin. Another thing is to pull the spark plug if you dunk it and want to get the water out. hydraulic damage can result because of it being filled with water. Have seen this a few times.
