also inspect the upper bearing housing area VERY CLOSELY.. if you see ANY spider cracking you will have this issue. Some times you can not see this unless you remove the part

Also if you can find a sealed or shielded bearing for the top next to the starter cone, that may help temporarily....face the seal outwards.

Not exactly the same but gives you an idea of how a liquid / vapor seal works...
Basically oil film is the final seal.

The tank sits on the floor of the radio compartment. I’d lay it’s a good 1 1/2 lower than the carb inlet
