I have an old Top speed 2 tunnel with a K&B 3.5 gold air cooled engine that id like to enter in Sport 20 B outboard class at the Internats, The motor is bone stock, no mods.......is it legal to run? I read the rule book and im a little confused.

Bill, obviously I’m not the Outboard Director but I’m 99% sure IT IS LEGAL to run since the gold version (forget it’s model name) was a production model back a number of years ago. Hope to meet you at the upcoming SOWEGA Tunnel Champs!

Hi Rick, I hope you are well!. Sure have had some good races with you.. I am having a hard time getting boats done with this dam epoxy allergy. In the end we are making head way and hope to get back into the grove some time soon. (I have had to re-think every aspect of a boat build). Its been a few years since I have been to a good race but we are heading to Johnson City in a few weeks and very much looking forward to that. Be well buddy!

We are doing well Mike, Thank you for asking
I have no idea what I would do with myself if I were in you shoes,,,
I sure enjoy fiddling in the garage with my toy boats, but you are correct. **** near every time I touch one, it is getting epoxy put on/in it somewhere!
Someday, I hope to hit the water with you again.

Just make sure the carb and exhaust are stock not drilled and give em hell. I still have one that Rod Geraghty did for my son

Bill...just for future knowledge....the gold K&B outboard is a 3.5 SS (aircooled)there is another with a black head called SX(water cooled)..Both have the redesigned lower and the canister muffler...both run well...but I kinda prefer the gold version...it has the modified cylinder head with the scallops on the inside of the combustion ring ...some say it give better performance...if it does...I never noticed

The scallops in the head do mostly zero.. the performance however comes from the heat the anodizing holds. Rod and I had many conversations on this very topic and were both convinced the scallops were a detriment.. or at the least did nothing.. and the anodizing a positive. Rod felt that the 21s woke up some just because.. the heat was retained in the the chamber. I tend to agree.

The SS.. I don't race them anymore.. was NO QUESTION to me.. the fastest K+B 21 made. I loved mine and it was bullet fast.. (my best motor was never even taken apart). I feel the largest performance loss to the K+B motors was the lack of a low speed needle.

Good motor.. very good motor!

Grim, when i get the needle close, it does run really good, and its been a very good engine longevity wise, and very dependable! Might not have the performance of the O.S., but ya still gotta do 6 laps to get the points! And NIB i paid 150.00 for the motor! Those days are GONE im afraid!
